Ala Moana Mall

Decided that I needed to stop being such a wuss, and to get out to Ala Moana Park. The driving motivator, actually, was to wander over to the mall to see if there was a decent grocery store (yes), figure out where the drug store is, and so on.

Wandered briefly into the Hawaiian accessories store. A saleswoman, presumably observing the pre beach coloring of my arms, presented me with a small shell lei. I wandered through, idly, looking at things until the hula being played in the store was Pearly Shells (with the Hawaiian lyrics). I last heard that song when we were singing for my grandmother in the hospice, which in turn harkened back to the days when she taught it to me on my first trip to the island (although probably before that - she started on it after I had developed the skill to be self conscious). As I recall, she had taught that hula to her children long before that.

I decided, since the sun was turning down, that the right way to begin this vacation would be to salute Lono as he set, with my toes in the sea. I got down the water about 5 minutes early, and watched the red sun disappear into the haze (not, alas, the clearest of days).

Back to the hotel. Motivated by all this adventure, I decided that one of the restaurant buffets would be more suitable than room service - only to discover that there were no tables available. So I'm about to curl up with what the nice folks have brought me from their kitchen, and collapse into bed.
