Human society is infinitely perfectable. It can always be better than it is. But not acknowledging and celebrating that it's also better than it used to be devalues the entire struggle to make it better in the first place.

Case and point. While the new Mazda you rented recently did not come equipped with a comfortable/safe steering wheel position for you, it still beats the pants off a horse and buggy, right?
Hoist by my own rhetorical petard, eh? I knew having smart relatives would be the end of me someday.
But, yeah, absolutely. For that matter, despite being designed by impractical engineers, it's vastly safer, considerably longer-lasting, and gets somewhat better gas mileage than the cars of just thirty years ago.
