Our ancestors got into harvesting shellfish in the Neolithic period. It turns out that it's very easy, almost year-round, to go out and catch a clam (or oyster, periwinkle, mussel or scallop), providing a reliable food source to sustain a community for generations.
Of course, one is then presented with the dilemma that what you've got is: a clam. Experts believe that there are only two ways to make delicious meals out of shellfish.
One, add water, fresh long grain and wild rice, butter, bacon, and chives to the shellfish, season to taste, cook over a very hot flame, and discard the shellfish. (Improved results may be obtained by discarding the shellfish prior to cooking.)
Two, feed the shellfish to domesticated boars, then slaughter and eat the boars.
