By the way, it appears that Rice University is going to eliminate the last of its free parking this fall. Thus stopping the scourge of, I guess, joggers shamelessly using Rice's jogging path.
It's certainly going to mean that my gaming group is going to leave Rice for freer pastures after thirteen years. It endangers the viability of Owlcon.
I don't think they're going to convert the unused parking spaces to greenspace. I'm just guessing, but I think they're going to leave the unused asphalt in place, storing and reradiating Houston summer heat, failing to absorb rainfall, and slowly aging, cracking, and degrading.

Nah, it'll become paid parking. Plans are underway as a part of Rice's long term construction program to take up swaths of parking lot on the east side of the stadium for new buildings. This parking lot space will be recaptured on the west side.
Yay.
Let me be abundantly clear: Fuck Rice. If there is no free parking at Rice, fuck them right in the ear.
If there's no free parking for alumni, that's a significant change in policy on the part of the administration. If they want people from outside to come inside the hedges, they need to have free parking. Or maybe they're planning on people using the rail line to get there?
For 2005-2006, parking permits for the Greenbriar Lot will cost faculty, staff, and students $130. This gives you access to the Greenbriar lot during normal business hours, and a few different lots after hours, such as the North Lot and the Abercrombie Lot- basically, the bare minimum in on-campus parking privileges.
It may be the case that Greenbriar Lot is still free parking for visitors. Though not ideal, this is basically the same situation as right now. Still not a good situation, I agree.
What Adrian is saying is the same thing that Angelo is telling me offline, although HW's comment suggests additional knowledge; we'll pursue our investigation.
It's unclear how one can charge group X for parking in Greenbriar Lot and have it be free for group not-X.
"Let me be abundantly clear: Fuck Rice. If there is no free parking at Rice, fuck them right in the ear."
Dumb question: Why so angry?
It's not anger so much as vehement utilization of the free market. Rice and I disagree; I don't value their resources as much as they do, and they don't value me (or other Rice alumni) as much as I do. They're free to charge for parking and I'm free to go elsewhere.
Since I'm saying goodbye to a relationship going back to 1989, I'm a little vehement about Rice choosing to end it.
Is this just grousing about losing free facilities? Yeah, but consider: Our group is 80% Rice students, staff, and alumni. It's not obviously not in Rice's interests not to provide facilities for a group like ours. (Triple negative, sorry.)
Make your displeasure known. Submit cathartic diatribes to responsible parties. A few minutes browsing the Rice website suggest the following targets of opportunity:
Eugen Radulescu, Parking Facilities Manager (eugen@rice.edu)
Mike Morgan, Parking Supervisor (mickeymo@rice.edu)
Alumni Affairs Office (alumni@rice.edu)
Tony Shepard, Vice President for Public Affairs (tshepard@rice.edu)
Kathy Collins, Vice President for Finance (kcollins@rice.edu)
David Leebron, President (president@rice.edu)
