Here's stage 2 of the great dragon Marthrangul.
I'm more or less finished with the spine mane, and I'm not incredibly unhappy with it.
I'm started basing the skin. The "cardinal red" I'm using is not as red as I thought, but I think it'll do fine as a base; a bright red highlight should fix it up quite nicely. The topology of the skin and scales is interesting, in the sense that a moderately thick paint wants to stay on top, up on the scales; a dark wash just on the skin between the scales will be very easy.
I'm a bit unhappy with the joint gap at the wing, which didn't fill in as much as I'd like. I should have puttied it earlier in the process. At least it's on the inside between the wings, where people will pay less attention.
The wings themselves are going to be a giant pain-in-the-ass, I've decided, with those huge flat areas to get a decent base on, let alone doing any sort of highlighting or decoration.

"Painting the dragon": obvious euphemism for masturbation.
I thought this was an interesting way to do Marthrangul's wings:

I think this particular approach is better looking (and maybe simpler) than the example on Reaper's website.
Not bad. It goes in my ideas folder.
