The Theoretical Question of New PCs

posted by Ginger at 03:42 PM, June 11, 2003 | Filed under : Character Proposals | Comments and Followups

Arref ruminates on how to add new PCs to an ongoing campaign. I’ve said for a long time that I could see House of Cards going on indefinitely, and part of that is that I could see bringing in new people if existing players left.

I’ve been very happy with the two characters who’ve been assumed by new players, but I wouldn’t want to close off the possibilities of new characters. Some of Arref’s ideas simply wouldn’t work in House of Cards, but others are intriguing.

(Specifically, Chaos PCs and mind-blasted elders are probably right out.)

I also think that unknown scions are less of a problem than Arref does. Some of the elders are party-hearty with the ladies and might well have left behind pregnant lovers. Steve’s contentions about how you could have a mother not know about her own child notwithstanding, for the purposes of House of Cards, I think we’re probably restricted to men.

We’ve established that we’re not beyond tampering with the unknown dead kids of Oberon, too, which Arref sort of mentions but doesn’t touch on directly (he mentions the missing wives).

We also have some other ideas about how you might get an unknown heritage PC that we’re not ready to discuss for spoiler reasons. And there are a couple of NPCs that would make great PCs.

So, yes, we have thought about what we would do about new characters if the matter were to come up. In case you were wondering.

New players? This seems almost hypothetical, since we seem to loose very few. In all other PbeMs I have participated in the loss of players was several times faster than in House of Cards. (And, yeah. As always this says something about the GMs)

But we are fewer than when we started, aren't we?

I would of course be delighted if we could could find Tony Sturgeon. (of old Walks-with-Puma fame)

Added another round of thoughts, examples of things I've tried. Thanks for the nod.

One of the things that occurs to me that's a big difference between bringing folks in to House of Cards and bringing them into a by-the-book ADRPG game is that ditching ranks makes it much easier.

Olof: [blush] Thanks!

Current lurkers get first choice of slots. And we could accommodate a couple of more players easily. I have some ideas ...

Seems to me you've already got a nice mix of niches, as it were.

"Ditching ranks" is almost required...

I think we have a nice mix of niches, but there are several niches that I think are underserved. I don't think we could accommodate any character that wandered in, though.
