IMC: Walking the Patternposted by Ginger at 09:46 PM, July 10, 2003 | Filed under : IMC | Comments and Followups I’m skipping IMC 3 (the spy report), at least for the time being. Moving on to the fourth IMC, Arref takes on a meme from the Shadows of Amber board:MaBarry asks: “How young will you allow someone IYC to Walk the Pattern? Are there any exceptions? Why or why not?”It’s not particularly well known how old the elders were when they walked the Pattern. Nobody has looked into the matter, and they haven’t volunteered any information. The youngers who have walked it have been in the 18-25 range, if not older. It’s not widely known, but one person made a first Patternwalk at the age of 14, and seems to have suffered no ill effects. It’s not clear whether Dara was pregnant with Merlin at the time she walked the Pattern. If that’s the case, it’s not clear what effects that Patternwalk may have had on Merlin. Not all of the youngers walked the Amber Pattern the first time out. Martin walked the Rebman Pattern, and a couple of the youngers took their first Patternwalk on the Tir Pattern. And, of course, Merlin recently walked his father’s Pattern at Paris. Nobody has yet attempted any assessment of the differences in skills and abilities of various family members based on which Pattern they walked the first (or any other) time. Follow up: the trackback URL for this entry is: http://www.whiterose.org/MT/mt-tb.cgi/1927 5 Comments Mark Another younger made the walk at 15, you may recall, but that's pretty much a secret (mainly because no one's asked him directly). Ginger Are you sure it wasn't you I was talking about and misremembering? Olof Hm. I guess no one knows how old Ossian was when he took the Pattern. My guess is that he took it before 18. (but probably after 14) Very well. Kris Paige was over a hundred Shadow Earth years before she knew her father and that there was such a thing as Pattern! I'm assuming she walked the Amber Pattern, but I don't think it was ever carved in stone. Leslie *snicker* Knowing Robin, Julian probably waited on her Patternwalk for a while. She was more likely closer to 25 than 15. :) I've always had this picture of Julian waiting until pretty much everyone was out of the castle for one reason or another. And then sneaking her in a back way... |
