Romance and Tragedy

posted by Ginger at 10:23 PM, August 28, 2003 | Filed under : GM Notes | Comments and Followups

Chris Kindred posted something about tragic romances in Ill Met in Amber, which I follow a little even though I don’t play in it. It got me to thinking about romance in House of Cards.

I’m not sure that any of the romances currently going on in the game are actually tragic, at least none that I’m ready to admit to. But the motto of House of Cards is “choices have consequences”, and that applies to the romances as well. In that sense, I can find comparisons to the items on the IMiA list.

I think some of the ongoing romances could become tragic, and I’m not averse to that as a story element. The tragic end of Paige’s affair with Martin has been a brilliant story element, and even though Kris hated it at the time, I think we’ve gotten a far more interesting Paige out of it than we might otherwise have gotten. (And $DEITY knows, we’ve gotten a more interesting Martin out of his love affairs.)

Having said that they’re not all tragic, there’s not a one of the romances that doesn’t have stormclouds ahead of it, one way or another. Choices do have consequences, and some of those consequences won’t be easy for those who have made them.

EEEeeeekk! I play in both games! Oh man, the next months are going to be interesting.

Actually the romantic element of Amber is one of the reasons that I enjoy this particular milieu so much. Superhero romance is fun (all that spandex, doncha know?) but not terribly filling. Like cheetos. D&D romance -- I've *never* had one of those go well. WoD romance -- a bit too angsty for this girl. Rifts romance -- yeah, right. But Amber... ah Amber, *this* is the game to play a romance in. :)

On second thought, Marius already has several tragic romances. [sticks dramatic wrist to forehead] Heck, he hasn't been seen with a woman who isn't messed up mentally, except _maybe_ Folly...
