GM Policy on Unannounced Absences

We’ve run into some issues over time in the game where players have vanished without mentioning it to the GMs. While we expect real life concerns to be more important than any game, we also hope that players realize they have not only GMs but fellow players who may be waiting on them and/or worried about them.

Most of the time, players have kept us notified of upcoming absences, or told us as soon as possible when an emergency has kept them from posting. However, we’ve now had enough cases where we’ve been left wondering where a player has gone that we feel it’s necessary to have a policy about unannounced absences.

If a player doesn’t post for two weeks without contacting us (either in advance or ASAP) to let us know what’s up, we’ll close the character’s current scene(s) and put the character on hiatus. It’ll be up to the player to contact us to bring the character back out of hiatus.

A second unannounced absence will be considered abandoning the character unless there’s a good explanation.

Any absence that’s mentioned to the GMs in advance is not unannounced.

We regret the need to have a policy, but we feel it’s only fair to the players who may be holding threads and actions to know when they can move forward with their characters and storylines. We appreciate the efforts of players to keep us informed about their availability, and hope those efforts keep us from ever needing to invoke this policy.
