Science in House of Cardsposted by Ginger at 01:42 PM, October 09, 2003 | Filed under : Useful Player Knowledge | Comments and Followups We’re happy to use science to support reasonable verisimilitude, but not as a workaround for the lower tech level of Amber. House of Cards is not a science fiction game; it’s a fantasy game with a loose first-series setting. We expect the players to honor the GMs’ broad statement of intent for Amber and other locales in the game, including any hard SF/cyberpunk areas we may use, and in return, we’ll be happy to accept scientific advice on how things that work will work to increase the enjoyment of players who prefer accuracy in their games. Follow up: the trackback URL for this entry is: http://www.whiterose.org/MT/mt-tb.cgi/2393 2 Comments Arref Since I was the one who used the 'scientist' label (much in fun), I'll make a point of saying that I agree strongly with this in my own games and am pleased to live under it herein. The methods of science are not the be-all in the universe of Amber. I think a universe can have rationale without holding to 'scientific method'. With the kindly assist of the GM Hivemind, I'll be a better metaphysician from here out. Michael Croft Having found that I owned 2 issues of Larry Marder's Tales of the Beanworld that are not part of the collections I have on the bookshelf, I borrow one of his descriptive lines:"It's not just a place, it's a process." |
