New Logo

posted by Ginger at 06:55 PM, November 16, 2003 | Filed under : GM Notes | Comments and Followups

I’ve been thinking for a while about a new logo for the site, and while I don’t know that this is exactly what I want to do, it’s along the lines of what I’ve had in mind.

This is a smaller version of the logo, with the cards showing through the letters. I’m not perfectly crazy about the font, but I know I want something with wide letters, probably all caps, to get the maximum amount of the card background showing through.

This is the alternate font Arref suggested. Michael thinks (and I agree) that we’d need to do some manual kerning to make it work exactly, but we could do that.

Hmmm. It is hard to tell what the pictures are in either font. It just looks like a jumble. What about using the cards themselves to make the letters (or the left vertical of each letter)?

mmm.
I'm not convinced of either choice. The first one is more 'readable' and the second allows more of the 'cards' impression.

mmm.
Thinking.

What would happen if instead of making the intervening space between letters black, you left the cards barely visible but much darker than the "letters" part of the design? That might trick the eye into seeing the cards while still leaving the text readable.... On the other hand, that might not give you as crisp a look as what you're after....

You know, I was thinking almost the exact opposite of Karen's suggestion. Right now, the letters are too much of a 'cut-out.' They break up the design of the cards. What I'd suggest is leaving the original rectangular 'box', but fading it out quite a bit and outlining the letters in a darker complimentary color, say a kona brown or something... I don't know. Just a thought.

Second better than first, but not enthralled by either. I think the manual kerning would make the second more readable... hmm... another project to divert me from real work... wohoo!
