IMC: Age and Perception (Elders)

Benedict is the eldest surviving elder, although Reid remembers Osric and Finndo. The younger elders all look up to Ben, and his words weigh heavily with them.

Corwin, like Benedict, is a survivor from an almost mythical era. He’s now the king of his own Pattern, and much occupied there in what his daughter describes as post-partum. He tries to reach out to his nephews and nieces, takes them seriously when others may not, and seems to want to mend old rifts. Yet he’s awkward with his own children and his realm seems to have no place for them. His relationships with his sibs have changed too, but it’s too soon to see their new shape.

Caine is the last of the really old elders. Wily and slippery, he’s the brother who didn’t hesitate to add the sobriquet Kinslayer to his name; nor did he hesitate to capture and possibly dispose of his niece, Random’s sworn knight. He’s not a man the elders want to be on the wrong side of. Like Corwin, he’s changed since the war and his relations with his sibs remain unsettled.

Fiona is the most deeply implicated of the surviving siblings in the redheaded plot. She’s got to prove her loyalty, even if her competence isn’t in question. Everyone relies on her for arcane advice, but even her children look at her askance every now and again.

Bleys enjoys playing the bogeyman or the wicked uncle: mad, bad, and dangerous to know. He’s also learned the lesson that allying with the younglings can be valuable, and has taken it to heart. He’s a good uncle to go to with a problem, if you don’t mind owing him the chit for his assistance.

Llewella is the youngest of the “middle” youngers. As a Rebman, her loyalty is always in question, except when it’s not. She has her own goals, yet she is trusted more than Fiona.

Florimel: love her, hate her, or fear her, it’s almost impossible to be indifferent to her. She’s the youngest of the surviving daughters, and in some ways babied more than her younger brothers. And though she’s old enough to be the mother of many of the youngers, they seem to treat her more as an older sister or cousin than as an aunt.

Julian is regarded as “older” than some of his elder sibs because of his competence and special knowledge. His abilities in his chosen field are great and his tongue is sharp. Some adore him without reservation, and others find his demands too great to bear.

Gerard is the tragic brother: a good man felled by an unexpected event who bears up and keeps going. For all that he’s the strongest still, the family has closed ranks around Gerard. The elders are, in their own ways, quite protective of him—as are many of the youngsters.

Random, like Corwin, is about to undergo a second sea change in his relationships with his siblings, and a third if you count the upcoming revelation of his child on top of his Pattern. He clearly has some problems with being the “adult” in a relationship (witness his awkwardness with Martin). How that will work out with his Kingship and his new Pattern is unclear.
