IMC: Fashionposted by Ginger at 12:36 PM, April 10, 2004 | Filed under : IMC , Traveller's Guide to Amber , Traveller's Guide to Paris , Traveller's Guide to Rebma , Traveller's Guide to Xanadu | Comments and Followups This is an old one via Arref from Claire’s original question (on the SOA forum). I don’t think I have a detailed answer for everything Claire asked, but I have some thoughts. Amber fashion tends to be late fifteenth to early eighteenth century. The more formal clothes are, the older the fashion. (Hence the outfits on the Trumps.) In practice, the fashions have drifted slowly forward, and castle formality is a little out of step with the rest of the city. Fashion is complicated by the tendency of the royals to bring in odd clothes from Shadow. Anything that’s “modern” and made by machine is subject to the tech entropy of Amber, which makes it hard for Martin to start a trend for Converse All-Stars. On the other hand, jeans are beginning to show up as a fashion staple in the working classes. The royals wear underwear suited to whatever they’re wearing. It is known that Martin and Random are both boxer men; there has been some discussion of tie-dying Jerod’s underwear, too. Underwear choices in other classes generally run toward the historical period they’re emulating. In Paris, fashions are late Victorian to early Edwardian, although clothing from other eras and cultures only gets you stared at in the street. Arref has done a lot of work on Rebman fashions. Check out the encyclopedia to see some of it. The dress code in Xanadu is best described as “rock’n’roll casual”.
