What’s For Dinner?

posted by Ginger at 04:51 PM, October 06, 2004 | Filed under : Traveller's Guide to Amber | Comments and Followups

This article talks about some of the details of medieval eating once you get past the bit about Medieval Times and its imitators. While Amber is not purely medieval (for instance, the place settings are analogous to those from the 17th or 18th century), some of the other details from the article, about spices and presentation and such, definitely would apply to the kitchens of Amber. Particularly, take a look at the amount of food served, which is the sort of extravagance I associate with Oberon’s kingship.

Oh excellent! I've been looking at food things for Abford, because cooking is important to Meg, so I need to have a base against which she can show surprise.

An interesting article but IMO it probably doesn't go far enough. Not only should there be no tomatoes or potatoes, but vedgetables in general should almost totally. Medieval nobles existed on an all-meat diet, getting almost all their fibre from bread - not the cruddy white stuff eaten today, of course.
But the huge courses explain a lot. Amber has large meals because Oberon and Corwin, et al, have colossal apetites, but this has a knock-on effect in the shadows, which explains why 18th C kings had terrific obesity problems [George IV - sheesh!]. Obviously the recent obsession with healthy eating must date from Corwin's return to Amber. ;-)

I think the only person in Amber who has an obsession with "healthy eating" is Folly. Whenever we've described feasts, almost all the PCs and most of the NPCs have headed right for the meats and starches.
