Woman of Many Faces

One of the things I’m enjoying about the Vialle-Hannah thread is that I’m getting to show a more positive face for Vialle. Vialle has really taken a hit reputation-wise since the end of the Regency, what with the debacle of discussing the coronation and her putting the smackdown on her husband’s always-popular former lover and said lover’s feminist ambitions.

One of the things I have found weak in the original source material for Amber is the portrayal of female characters, who tend to be one-dimensional. I’ve been worried that Vialle has gone from hero to zero. She’s supposed to be more complex than either of those single-word definitions, and the thread with Hannah (as the one with Celina, where she also offered support) will, I hope, help remind people that it’s been a couple of months in-game and Vialle is still the same nice person she was during the Regency.

I'm hoping at some point Garrett can speak to Vialle when she gets to Xanadu. Even though it wasn't his fault, he really feels like crap for what his mother did to her.

It's so funny, the different viewpoints, because Hannah sees that as what Random did to Vialle. Garrett's mother did exactly what Hannah would expect any reasonable mother in her situation to do, but because Random didn't do what she'd expect any reasonable King in his situation to do, he's the one at fault in her mind.

But then again, it's safer for Garrett to blame his mother.

Marius still feels the same way about Vialle. [snicker]

If Zelazny had a weakness, it was in portrayal believable female characters.
Luckily, we don't have to be so limited. :-)
