Advanced Powers = Advanced Degrees

posted by Ginger at 08:33 PM, March 13, 2005 | Filed under : GM Notes , Useful Player Knowledge | Comments and Followups

We had a number of people ask about the possibility of putting a Power over 5 with their experience point. We’ve been thinking about that, and we’re trying to formulate an official rule, but the metaphor we’ve been mulling over is that we think anyone who wants to buy a Power over 5 needs to make a contribution to the knowledge of the Power. Sort of “your M.A. in Mirrors” or “your Ph.D. in Pattern”.

So... is 'naive' a power?

Well Adonis has it much higher than 5. :-)

So, just for clarification -- do you mean an in-character or out-of-character knowledge contribution? That is, if (for example) Reid wants to go up to a 6 in Trump, does he hafta spend three months game-time in the dungeons doing experiments on how to turn prisoners into living Trumps? Or does Chuck hafta write up something out-of-character proposing how prisoners might be turned into living Trumps?

Demonstrating it in character.

It's not really the research part. It's the surprising us part: coming up with unexpected applications. (Living trumps would be one example--if he can make it work.)

So, exactly which contributions to Pattern knowledge we made by which Elder?
Let me guess, it was Corwin who thought up Pattern Contraception? ;-)
