A letter brought to Random by Ranger courier. It arrives a few days after his return from Xanadu.

To Random, Rex

Greetings from Arden. Your brother Prince Julian bid me send you word of any important events in Arden and Garnath in his absence.

Brousailles and Whistling Pines in the southwest both report increasedincursions from the Deep Green. As I mentioned in my last report, we have lost both Girth’s and the senior who manned it to the Deep Green. The Mews still reports in, although the news we have is by hawk, since the paths are mazed and mortal men cannot be sure of them now.

Our patrols are limited to the near edges of Arden. Now we concentrate on keeping the Deep Green out of Garnath. I am told we do not always succeed, for which I express my regrets.

There have also been several more kidnappings, following the lines Prince Julian told me he had mentioned to you. There are two more who might be susceptible. One I have by me, and the other is the boy who brings this message. I think Prince Julian would want him to stay out of Arden.

When I have more news, and the Unicorn willing it will be better, I wills end it to you at once.
