If you've missed our monthly Curmudgeons Cons at Manny's Coffee Shop & Deli, then you've missed indulging in Manny's corned beef. It's such a Chicago staple that Mayor Daley has made it part of his Super Bowl wager with Indianapolis mayor Bart Peterson. I'm just sayin' . . .

Well, I hope Mayor Peterson enjoys his corned beef (grumble grumble).
All grousing aside from this former Marylander and current Bears fan, congratulations to the Colts and all of their fans. And even, I suppose, to Jim Irsay.
I like Manny's, but Indianapolis has quality Jewish food of its own in the form of Shapiro's Deli.
But Shapiro's is too far to go for a Curmudgeons Con. I'm not going any further than Schererville.
Oh, it's not better than Manny's but it's just as good, so what's the point of a bet? They have corned beef of their own. What we ned to send them is celery salt and Giardiniera. (Try to get a decent hot dog or beef sandwich in southern Indiana. It can't be done.)
I must say, when they mentioned "Jim Caldwell" during the telecast, my nephew just about got whiplash doing a double-take.
(I first heard about him when he was the head coach at Wake Forest, and they were playing a post-Rose Bowl Northwestern team. He played for Iowa in the 70s, so it seemed like I *should* have heard of him sooner...)
And for total self-indulgence, earlier in the day, "A Gathering of Eagles" was shown on Turner Classic Movies, starring Rock Hudson as "Col. Jim Caldwell" newly assigned to a bomber wing with Strategic Air Command. He's quite the jerk.
It should have been a sign...
DAMN!!!! I can't believe I missed "A Gathering of Eagles." The song Rod Taylor sings at the officer's party was written by Tom Lehrer.
