Dave Stevens 1955-2008

by Jason Fliegel

Rocketeer

Mark Evanier and Heidi MacDonald both report that Dave Stevens, creator of the Rocketeer, has died.

I always enjoyed the Rocketeer comic and the Rocketeer movie.

So did I. Damn.

That's truly a shame. He wasn't the most prolific artist, so there was always the sense of wanting more. He had such an engaging, accessible style, though, that no matter how much he'd given us, I'm sure that feeling would have always remained.

Wow. I didn't even know he had leukaemia. I'm quite gobsmacked.

Dave was a great artist, and his Rocketeer work introduced me to Bettie Page as well as being a great adventure story. I appreciate his perfectionism; I only wish that his standards would have been enough lower to permit greater productivity.

Dave Stevens work in the '80s was always the comics my friends wish we had, but could never get. We had the spinner rack, and that was all. He will be missed.
