Sunday Song Lyric

by Jason Fliegel

Later than usual, here's this week's Sunday Song Lyric.

Last week at our monthly Curmudgeons Con, we were talking about covers -- when one artist does another artist's song. For my money, the best covers are the ones where the covering artist does the song in a completely different style from the original. My favorite example of this -- Ben Folds covering Dr. Dre -- probably isn't suitable for a family blog, so here's another favorite of mine: KISS covering the Rolling Stones.

2000 Man
Jagger/Richards

Well, my name is a number
A piece of plastic film
And I'm growin' funny flowers
In my little window sill

Dont you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all

Well my wife still respects me
I really misused her
I am having an affair
With the random computer

Don't you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, your brain's still flashin'
Like it did when you were young
Or do you come down crashin'
Seeing all the things you'd done
All was a big put on

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your son
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun

And you know who's the 2000 man
And your kids they just won't understand you at all

My biggest surprise here is that this is a family blog? :-) What would be the comic equivalent? Would the Ultimate line be considered a cover? I haven't kept up with many beyond the Ultimates comic but it seemed that at least with the X-Men and Spiderman lines that they were covering material done in the non-Ultimate line but with an attempt to update or make them "fresh." Riffs on the Phoenix saga, Clone saga, the relationships with their Big Bads (Magneto and Green Goblin, respectively), and so on. Essentially they are cover songs done in a different style from the original. Or attempts to do so, any way.

What about Invincible vs., say, Spiderman? The "young hero gets powers and with it great responsibility but still has to balance his real life" story could be a song, if you will. Invincible is a cover of the original Spiderman. Stylistically similar, different content.

Anyway, should have posted the Ben Folds song. My family would approve.
