Stan Smith of American Dad is the Mongul of Fox Animation.
First, Jack Kirby created Darkseid, stone-browed god of tyranny, as part of a burst of creative energy that continues to unfold today. Some time later, Matt Groening created Homer Simpson, fat, stupid, vice-ridden animated sitcom husband, as part of a burst of creative energy that continues to unfold today.
Next, Jim Starlin created Thanos, stone-browed quasi-deity who would "court Death herself with the slaughter of a billion billion worlds as his dowry", out of a desire to create works that followed Kirby's pioneering cosmic vision and shared his grand scope. Some time later, Seth MacFarlane created Peter Griffin, fat, stupid, vice-ridden animated sitcom husband, out of a desire to create a show that followed Groening's pioneering efforts in prime time animation and shared his success.
Finally, while unable for business reasons to use Thanos, Jim Starlin reincarnated his antagonist as Mongul, master of Warworld, in order to continue his exploration of cosmic possibilities with new characters. Some time later, while unable for business reasons to use Peter Griffin, Seth MacFarlane reincarnated his protagonist as Stan Smith, Republican CIA warmonger, in order to continue his pursuit of success with a new sitcom indistinguishable from the old.

The problem with this analogy is that Thanos does not suck, and Peter Griffin is consistently the worst thing about Family Guy.
So apparently I haven't missed anything by stopping my cable in 2003 and not watching TV since.
If the analogy holds, Lord Papal will be the male lead in the next Seth MacFarlane project, which will be an "indy" movie or webcomic.
