Comics I read the past two weeks

by Jason Fliegel

I got a lot of stuff the last two weeks, so I'm not going to go too in depth on most of these books

Franklin Richards: Not-So-Secret Invasion: I really like these Franklin Richards books. The stories are pretty similar, but they're lots of fun.

DC Universe 0: A bunch of short previews of the various minis spinning out of Final Crisis. In other words, I paid DC fifty cents for the privilege of having them advertise to me. Some of the minis look pretty good -- the Legion one and Final Crisis itself. Others, not so much.

Legion of Super-Heroes 41: Way to sucker me in with the cover, DC. I want my Shvaughn Erin, dammit! Shooter's run continues to be enjoyable.

Thor: Ages of Thunder: Matt Fraction delivers a Thor story that's pretty good, even though the characters featured therein act nothing like they usually do in the Marvel Universe.

Giant-Size Avengers-Invaders: A reprint of the Avengers/Invaders story from Avengers 71, a couple of Invaders stories from their 70s series, and one from 2006 -- all written by Roy Thomas. Great stuff.

Avengers-Invaders 1: For some reason, Marvel co-published this with Dynamic Forces. The first half reads like every other first issue that Alex Ross has ever put out, with dramatic one-by-one descriptions of each member of the cast. Then it quickly segues into an Avengers versus Invaders fight.

Amazing Spider-Man 558: A fun done-in-one story featuring a couple of the villains that have been introduced over the past few issues.

DC Universe Special: Justice League of America 1: As Greg mentioned, this reprints the Injustice Gang of the World story from JLA 111, along with the Secret Society of Villains 3-parter from JLA 166-168 and a Martian Manhunter story from 1959. Seventies JLA is fun. Go buy this comic.

Buffy 14: Huh. I should have seen that last page coming.

Invincible Iron Man 1: Matt Fraction's new Iron Man book. Mildly intriguing, but I probably won't be back for issue 2.

Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas 1: This one's written by Iron Man director Jon favreau and it's so money! Actually, it was just OK. It's mostly set-up, but on the plus side, Favreau seems to have a better grasp on Iron Man than Mark Millar or Brian Bendis do (and by "better," I mean "Favreau's version of Iron Man actually seems like a hero.")

Captain America 37: I've been reading this book in trades, and more recently in hardcover. With the hardcover that came out last week, I got caught up to the current issue, so now I'm going to be picking this book up off the stands. Which is a long way of saying that this is probably the best marquee superhero book out right now. Do yourself a favor, though -- if you're going to pick this up, start at the begining of Brubaker's run instead of the current issue.

Jonah Hex 31: Jonah gets sent out to capture a fearsome bandit known as the Red Mask. But it's never as simple as that where Jonah Hex is concerned, is it?

American Dream 1: American Dream is the Captain America analogue in the Spider-Girl universe. Like all books set in that universe, it features writing by Tom DeFalco and eighties-Marvel-style art and plots. I dig it.

Nova 13: Nova tries to save the population of a world about to be devoured by Galactus. This book is solid.

Angel 7: We get more information about what happened to everyone in the wake of the end of the TV series. Plus, an appearance by a character I never expected to see in the comic.

Detective Comics 844: Batman and Zatanna versus the all-new Scarface. Plus, we find out what happened to the all-old Scarface.

Tor 1: Last year, Joe Kubert returned to one of his signature characters -- Sgt. Rock -- with a 6-issuee miniseries. Now he does the same with another of his signature characters -- Tor. It's bittersweet -- I can't help but see it as Kubert saying goodbye at the end of a long career, but I'm glad he's getting an opportunity to put a cap on his career instead of being forgotten like so many other greats. This is good stuff and you should be reading it.
