Losing Our Virginity

by Doug

While everybody appeared to be on vacation last week (I know I was), Virgin Comics announced that it was closing down (at least as far as publishing comics to the U.S. market is concerned). Last year I asked for some recommendations for Virgin titles that got a handful of responses but not exactly a groundswell of enthusiasm. As it turned out, I only ended up going after Garth Ennis's Dan Dare. Is anybody going to miss them?

Am I going to miss Garth Ennis indulging in the sort of fanboy nostalgia he breathes fire at others for doing? Fuck no.

I'll miss the laughs.

Mike Carey's Stranded was pretty good, but he's done better before and I'm sure he will again. Beyond that and Dan Dare, one of Ennis's best works ever, nothing from Virgin USA ever rose out of the pack to make me want to buy it.

Snake Woman was a perfect horror comic. The writing, plotting, scripting and drawing all worked together to keep my skin crawling.
