Blind Items

by Jason Fliegel

Unlike Jerry, I didn't make it to Wizard World Philadelphia this weekend. But I do hear things. Hypothetically speaking, of course. Things that might make you ask yourself questions like:

  • Which Spider-Man writer punched Dan DiDio in the face at an industry-only party?
  • Which Superman writer got caught by his editor talking to Joe Quesada about signing an exclusive deal with Marvel?
  • Which popular writer is working on a Vertigo-style revival of Power Pack for Marvel?
  • Which Marvel editor showed up late to a panel because he was in bed with three different women?
  • Which Image creator treated several dozen fans to dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse?
  • Which member of the "Dark Reign" Avengers is going to become a bona-fide hero before the end of the year?
  • Which member of the Teen Titans is going to get a Green Lantern ring?
  • Which popular license is moving from Dark Horse to IDW?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Well, I haven't heard things, so all of these are pure imagination.

1. My money is on Waid.

2. I'm going to guess Robinson, since the other choice, Rucka, has been pretty loyal to DC of late.

3. Neil Gaiman.

4. Those weren't women.

5. Kirkman, showing off what going independent can do for the bottom line.

6. Does anyone care?

7. Does anyone care? If so, my guess would be the hero currently known as "Eddie".

8. Probably Buffy, to join with Angel.

I wonder how Static would do with a GL ring? Back in Action Ccomics weekly, Dick Grayson was offered a shot at the ring when it looked like Hal was gonna die.

1. Hmmm. This doesn't explicitly suggest that it's a current Spider-Man writer. Stan Lee is probably far-fetched. But Gerry Conway is back in the DC stable.

2. Who's even writing Superman now? Although this doesn't suggest current, either, I'd assume it's not Elliot S! Maggin.

3. Gaiman seems a reasonable guess, but I'm going to go with Bendis, who's digging himself deeper and deeper into a rut and might like a nice, little surprise change-of-pace to bring his game back up again.

4. Even if Marvel is cooler than DC, that one's too far-fetched. You're making it up.

5. The suggestion of Kirkman makes sense, and Jerry pegs the reason why. My question is: How many servings of creamed spinach did they work their way through?

6. Daken has the blankest slate and would be the easiest to retrofit to "good guy."

7. They've been trying to figure out what to do with the Blue Beetle, so I'm going with him. It won't last, though.

8. What the heck--let's just go for the big kahuna: Star Wars. Since IDW already has the Trek series, we'll finally get what we've all been waiting decades for: Kirk & Spock vs. Darth Vader.

Are any of these real?

1a) I can't imagine any professional writer getting so worked up as to punch an editor in the face... oh, wait, this is the comics industry, where 'professional' is relative.

1b) C'mon. Comics writers don't fight. They get winded too easily.

4) Marvel... *editor*?!? Not possible.

6) Several of the Dark Avengers could become heroes. In order of likelihood:
-Sentry
-Captain Marvel
-Ares (none of these three are in disguise, and all have been on good side of the line at some point in time)
-Daken (as far as I can tell, his motive is to tick off his dad; wouldn't be that hard to switch him)
-Moonstone (she came pretty close to being a hero when she was dating Hawkeye in Thunderbolts; if she feels it's in her self-interest, she'd flip)
-Venom
-Bullseye
-Osborn (all of these are too psychotic to turn)

3. seems like an Ellis project to me.

#4 sounds like "his wife and two very young daughters who couldn't fall asleep in a hotel bed by themselves", to be honest. But the only item I've heard from from any other direction has been the "grown up Power Pack" book.

The beauty of it all is that even if you were to just completely make some over-the-top stuff up just to make fun of the whole concept of blind items and the gossipy nature of the comic book industry (hypothetically speaking), odds are that you couldn't make up something as ridiculous as reality.

So ... Vertigo-style Power Pack? That is ... wow.
