No word yet on who won the ratings war between the competing "teenage girl in distress" TV-movies about Jessica Lynch and Elizabeth Smart that aired last night. But the entertainment headlines ("Lynch, Smart Duke It Out in Dueling TV Movies") give a pretty clear indication of the show the networks really wish they could have showed us:
Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!
Clash of the Teenage Titans!
Elizabeth Smart - The Salt Lake Superstar vs. Jessica "Bronze Star" Lynch in a no-holds barred BATTLE ROYALE. Two teens enter, one woman leaves!
The winner will be showered with copious sympathy and adulation. The loser...will also be showered with sympathy and adulation, but a less attractive actress will portray her in the biopic.
Only on Pay Per View! Call your local cable operator now!
And so on. Normally I'd give the edge to the person with actual combat training in this case, but Lynch has yet to prove she can hold her own, mano a mano. Smart is a good deal younger, yet no one really knows what kind of freaky wilderness survival training she received while being held by Gandalf...er, Brian Mitchell.
Hopefully things will calm down so America will have time to look forward to the upcoming TV movie about Shoshana Johnson. Because the networks are clawing all over themselves to film the story of that "other" female POW from the 507th who actually fought back against her captors, right?
Right.
so if i get lost do i a movie of the week and a book deal. not that i lessening anything she had to go through but i mean really just b/c she is pretty blonde white girl she gets all the hero worship, money and all that
you should see the guys that come home with nothing more than thier parents love and adoration...what is this doing to them???
shouldnt they get a ticket tape parade too??
just my 2 cents...
> so if i get lost do i a movie

Yes. Good. Calm, yes. Through the Force, things you will see.
> not that i lessening anything
> she had to go through
Thank goodness, or my contempt would be embiggered.
> but i mean really just b/c she
> is pretty blonde white girl she
> gets all the hero worship, money
> and all that
Nonsense. She's not getting anything because she's a pretty blonde white girl. She's getting it because she's a pretty blonde white girl IN DANGER. And we MUST protect our ANGLO SPACE PRINCESSES!
> you should see the guys that come
> home with nothing more than thier

> is this doing to them???
Making them thank thier lucky stars that they escaped that hellhole and had thier parents' love and adoration to come home to?
> shouldnt they get a ticket tape
> parade too??
Yeah, but then they'd get parking violations stuck all over them. That's no way to treat real American heroes!
(Christ, Pete, where do you find these people?!)
> just my 2 cents...
I want my money back.
HeeWho, your public school education is showing again.
The word is 'embiggened' not embiggered.
Sheesh.
>Gandalf...er, Brian Mitchell
Now that's funny!
ha
perfectly cromulent
I am no expert on racism, buy here's my 2-cents on the subject: Shoshana Johnson was most likely ignored by the media not because she was black, but because she is a stumpy, unattractive, butch-looking women. Jessica Lynch better fits the mold of "daddy's little girl." And since the media/government were looking for a rescue mission hero, they went with the more photogenic of the two. In my opinion, if a stunning african american woman had been captured, the made-for-TV movie would have been about here, and Lynch's name would have been buried in obscurity right next to Shoshana Johnson's.
And never mind the gender discrimination here. Any made for TV movies feature any of the captured men? Nope. Reason? Male POW's wouldn't generate as much sympathy, or rile the cockles of the American public nearly as much as a cute lil' daddy's girl. Don't think for a second Rove & Co. didn't attempt to use the situation to get Joe Sixpack angry about what "they" were doing to our girls "over there."
I've got to give Lynch her ups for this, though; she isn't remaining silent while the government attempts to fabricate stories of her heriosm. She never fired a round and kudos to her for admitting as much (in addtion to her being raped). That took some gumption on her part for which she deserves recognition. I'm not sure if the bronze star is really the appropriate award, but it'll do.
