Karma, despite its pleasant appearance and inoffensive aroma, is still a bitch

Houston's only "hard rock" radio station has switched formats (registration required):

KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from a classic rock format to a Latino music format branded as Mega 101.

The station's web site was listed as under construction, but KLOL's former morning show hosts Walton and Johnson announced on their web site that they were informed Thursday night of the change.

The radio hosts stated on WaltonandJohnson.com that, "Thursday night Walton and Johnson were informed by lower-level management sources via a last-minute phone call that there would be no Walton and Johnson Show tomorrow. In it's place would be Hispanic music programs."

I could't bring myself to listen to Walton and Johnson, whose strange blend of unfunny comedy, right-wing whining, and leaden faux on-air personalities comprised some of the worst radio I've heard since 1986, when I drove through Oklahoma. On a Sunday. With nothing but an AM receiver. Even so, they claim on their website that their show was the "top-ranked (non-ethnic) morning show in Houston" in their demographic.

For comparison, APCB is the highest ranked blog not written by anyone other than a 30-something guy named Pete who lives in Houston.

I'm not important enough to get the Arbitron book, but at least two other web sites that track such things (including R&R.com) puts KLOL's overall ratings at 16th in Houston. Remove the "ethnic" stations ahead of it (KBXX, KLTN, KMJQ, KPTY, KOVE, and KHJZ), and KLOL moves up to a solid 10th place (hell, they're below two AM stations). I can't verify their claim about the morning 25-54 year-old market, but assuming those stations playing "non-white" music do better in the AM, that still leaves W&J 7th overall. Pretty weak.

Of course, KLOL's been going down the tubes since long before those two Mongoloids came along. Clear Channel's acquisition of the station further diluted an already depleted playlist. And with the songs they were playing readily available on three other stations in the area, KLOL's existence was no longer required. I mean, what does "hard rock" mean anymore, anyway? Metal? Not much call for that round here. Face it, most of the "rock" genre fits in just fine with "classic rock" - which these days includes Nirvana - while the newer stuff gets played on "alternative" stations.

Then again, maybe the Houston area cycling lobby is more powerful than we thought.

KLOL changes format
Damn. Did anyone see this coming? KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from......

I'm confused by your assessment of W&J and/or KLOL. Was the information you got specific to W&J's slot in the morning (as the second half of the paragraph indicates) or were you talking about KLOL as a whole (as the first half indicates?

(I only listened to W&J once and was pretty indifferent, but I'm generally curious)

--Posted by R. Alex on November 12, 2004 11:37 PM

Yes, W&J sucked.

But this is about ROCK. Time capsule stations will not do. You can't cut up the SPIRIT OF ROCK into three pieces! That's communism!

I felt worse about this than Kerry losing the election.

Because at least we still had ROCK.

But not anymore.

I am half tempted to move to Canada now.

Hope you speak spanish FOOOOOOOOL.
Now shut up. That is NO MASS.

Shocking - heartbreaking - in disbelief! Being a middle-aged native Houstonian, KLOL has been such a kindred companion. There are countless occasions when tuning into friendly voices & phenomenal music have literally saved souls and the entire KLOL staff will be profoundly missed. I also speak for several hispanic friends who are not at all enraptured by the demise of their magnifico, steadfast rock 'n' roll leader.

May the good fortune you have all given to this community be with you now!

I'm not sure I know what you're asking. W&J never played music, but that hardly differentiates them from most area morning DJs. The ratings I cited were for KLOL overall, since I don't have access to those for their specific time slot.

My point is that KLOL hasn't been playing much you couldn't hear on other stations for years. 93.7 covers stuff like the Who and Aerosmith, while 94.5 takes care of the mid-80s on up. I'm sure some stuff will fall through the cracks, but how many times do you want to hear "The Boys are Back in Town," anyway? KLOL's playlist the last decade has been the same 50 songs on shuffle, just like every other CC-owned station in town.

Now shut up. That is NO MASS.

Doesn't sound like you speak much Spanish either. Fool.

--Posted by Pete on November 14, 2004 10:02 PM

Pete, sorry for the confusion, let me try to clarify. I'm not particularly concerned about the actual content of KLOL (or W&J). I'm curious about the whether the ratings you're showing: 16th in Houston, 10th in Houston, and W&J being seventh in Houston. Did you derive that last from KLOL's ratings during the times that W&J runs or by doing something with the AM stations that I didn't catch that gauges KLOL's overall performance.

Does that make any more sense?

--Posted by R. Alex on November 15, 2004 2:06 AM

pete,
sounds to me like you are an idiot.
Where do you get your info from? I have been here in Houston for about five years now and really think you have no idea. the playlist is much larger than you say it is. i guess, if you keep switching the station looking for "the boy's are back in town", You would miss quite a bit, now you shut up and enjoy you're new crappy little latino station, while the rest of us search for something real. DON'T LIKE IT? GO HOME!

Did you derive that last from KLOL's ratings during the times that W&J runs or by doing something with the AM stations that I didn't catch that gauges KLOL's overall performance.

Yeah, I was removing ethnic stations plus AM radio and just putting the other FM stations with morning shows against them. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

--Posted by Pete on November 15, 2004 7:48 AM

sounds to me like you are an idiot.

Sigh.

Where do you get your info from? I have been here in Houston for about five years now and really think you have no idea.

Thanks for your seasoned input. After all, I've only been in Houston eight years, and listened to KLOL in College Station for about fifteen years before that. But feel free to share your venerable wisdom.

the playlist is much larger than you say it is.

Your way with facts astounds me.

now you shut up and enjoy you're new crappy little latino station,

All of you guys getting up in arms over Mega 101 are kinda behind the curve, since the KLOL you know and love was gutted when Clear Channel took over. Apparently the hijinx of "Outlaw" Dave and W&J were enough to distract you from that fact.

while the rest of us search for something real.

On Houston radio? Good luck.

DON'T LIKE IT? GO HOME!

Heh. I was here first.

--Posted by Pete on November 15, 2004 7:50 AM

Hm. That's at least the third "hard rock" Clear Channel station to receive a surprise format change this year, joining KSJO in San Jose (October) and KEGL in Dallas (May).

--Posted by kodi on November 15, 2004 12:11 PM

I am sad to see KLOL leave the airwaves. It has been a staple in my home since 1977. And I am furious to hear that radio recognizes "spanglish" as a language. And I am hispanic! Spanglish, the ebonics of the latin community. I don't know what is sadder.

Tell me pete what other morning shows were better than WALTON&JOHNSON. I mean according to you they were ranked 7th among non-ethnic or am radio. Please tell me what 6 non ethnic or non am radio morning shows were better then WALTON&JOHNSON. Basically u sound bitter, because they would dog the liberals so bad. Day after day, and yes that was entertaining because they would poke at both sides. But the reason why they would poke at JOHN F. Kerry so much(and that's why i know u hate WALTON&JOHNSON so much), because he was so fake. He was so fake, stupid ass people like you ate his words and believes like a bowl of cereal and just swallowed. I mean instead of talk about how old the music rock 101 played and stuff like that why don't u stop being fake like your boy and just say that your glad that WALTON&JOHNSON are gone. I like the music on the mega 101 but they should have atleast got rid of the no talent groups on the BUZZ,THE MIX,THE ARROW, OR THERE OTHER CLEAR CHANNELS. But wait they might have had better rates then WALTON&JOHNSON according to you. I still want to know the 6 MORNING SHOWS ABOUT WALTON AND JOHNSON. NON ETHNIC AND NO AM RADIO.

For the benefit of the sub-literate troglodytes that question Pete's credibility, here is validation, courtesy of the Houston Chronicle.

--*--

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/ae/music/2898407

11/13/04

"The current morning duo, Walton and Johnston, had the seventh-most-popular morning show in Houston, according to the most recent Arbitron radio rankings. The station was in a tie for 15th among listeners age 12 and older."

--*--

A little more research lists the other morning programs that beat out (from July-Sept 2004, anyway) the oh-so-hilarious Walton & Johnson.

http://www.animaux.net/stern/houston.html

The top 10 morning shows (6-10 a.m. weekdays):

1. KLTN-FM, Raul Brindis and Pepito (7.4 share)
2. KMJQ-FM, Tom Joyner (5.8)
3. KODA-FM, Sunny Morning Show (4.6)
4. (tie) KBXX-FM, Madd Hatta Morning Show (4.4)
4. (tie) KRBE-FM, The Morning Show with Sam Malone and Maria Todd (4.4)
6. KTRH-AM, Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard (4.2)
7. KLOL-FM, Walton & Johnson (3.8)
8. KILT-FM, Hudson & Harrigan (3.7)
9. (tie) KPRC-AM, Pat Gray (3.2)
9. (tie) KKBQ-FM, Q Morning Zoo (3.2)

--*--

I find it ironic that Walton & Johnson, whose ideas of comedic stylings involve the two clods pretending to be a hillbilly, a drag queen, and a Big Black Brotha, actually get beaten by honest-to-goodness black people and a Mexican homosexual puppet. (Just try telling me that Pepito's sock pal isn't gay.) And they nearly tie with the redneck demographic, natch.

--Posted by The Thing That Walks Like A Man on November 16, 2004 3:47 AM

Thanks. I tried reading "joey's" comment but my eyes started bleeding after a few seconds.

Okay, that's not entirely true. For the benefit of those who question my W&J-hating credentials, I've been on record as saying they were crap *years* before Kerry came along. Am I glad they're gone? Goddamn right I am, and as far as I'm concerned, most of the morning DJs in this town are welcome to follow them into obsolescence.

I will stipulate that my original comments about them being 7th were based on KLOL being ranked 16th overall. That said, W&J's claim that they were the best rated morning crew in town (as long as you didn't include those pesky minority demographics or other radio bands) is flat-out wrong. And if any of their fans had bothered to investigate for themselves, they'd know this.

Face it, they were beaten - consistently - by our local Lite Rock station and Sam Malone and Maria Todd, who make Regis and Kathie Lee look like Nick and Nora Charles. And that's not counting the gay puppet.

Lamenting the loss of KLOL is one thing, and I can see why many people are upset by the loss of the station, but defending the antics of those two Cro-mags boggles my mind. What's next, a petition to bring back The Mullets?

Your an idiot Walton and Johnson rule

--Posted by darren on November 16, 2004 2:48 PM

If Walton and Johnson rule, then they'll be back. Radio follows the money. If there's a popular show that got dropped for reasons other than ratings, it'll be picked up again somewhere else. It's happened in Houston many times before.

But, people, the ratings don't lie. If you loved Walton and Johnson, you're in the minority. And Clear Channel doesn't give a crap about the minority.

Don't make this about politics. No liberal conspiracy took down Walton and Johnson. They're out because too few people wanted to listen to them and their lame-ass show. They weren't too controversial or too right-wing; they just weren't funny.

--Posted by HWRNMNBSOL on November 16, 2004 3:33 PM

Oh the glories of freedom of speech! As is the case in all of the USA we can change the station if we do not like what we hear. Unfortunately every time I change the station I hear the same blah, blah, blah!
Although I never entirely agreed with W&J it was a lot better then whats left. At least if I didn't like what they were saying, I would get mad and change the channel or if I agreed, I'd say "right on". It really helped pass the time on a 50 minute commute and got me thinking instead of mindlessly driving or contemplating road rage.
Clearchannel gave us who listened to W&J the middle finger, plain & simple! Without a doubt politics had a lot to do with their decision, the snakes at Clearchannel said "let's see, what station stirs things up, which one openly disagrees with the media (who of course we need for advertising), which one gets people thinking out of the box? Hmmm?

--Posted by Bob Simmons on November 16, 2004 5:51 PM

Walton and Johnson.... man when i first got back from the Navy and heard a fag, brother and all mixed together i damn near through my radio out of the car and prayed to the radio gods to bring back stevens and proit. A coworker told me i just don't get it, and sujested that i give it a try for a day. I was holding my sides i was laughing so hard. And that was there hitch, they didn't want some mindnumb idiot without a thinking mans intelict, they didn't want the people that listen to a flippin laughing puppet! They wanted the 10%ers that had the thougtht and werewithall to get jokes on a deaper lvl. Think what you will by i thank them for every morning that i woke up and had them to start my day with a laugh and a steller outlook on life ingeneral. I will miss 101 profusly, and will now learn to FIGHT MY WAY OUT OF THIS MEXICAN HELL CLEARCHANNEL HAS INSTALLED IN MY NATION.

PS minority demographics dont make a differance to me, they win or will win in the people count but aslong as they choose to live the way they do they will never control the money. I rest easy knowing that america will be safe because i/and many like me work hard to do and become better people. God bless American.

I am almost stunned into speechlessness by this trainwreck of a thread.

My faves so far:

Mr. Simmons intimating that W&J somehow got "people thinking out of the box." If this is the case, then the far-superior Stevens & Pruitt must rank up there with the greatest minds of our time. If only Derrida had spent more time interviewing topless dancers...

But he pales next to the enlightened Mr. Eichenberg, who certainly does his Germanic lineage proud. It's comforting that one of Our Boys, a serviceman sworn to uphold Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, doesn't worry about those mongrel "minority demographics" who will never rise from their inferiority "aslong (sic) as they choose to live the way they do."

Mr. Eisenberg, I, too "rest easy knowing that america (sic) will be safe because i/and many like [you] work hard to do and become better people," protecting us from those subhuman "minority demographics." A pox on those damnable gypsies!

I'm heartened to know that a good ol' cross burning never goes out of style. God bless American (sic), indeed.

--Posted by The Thing That Walks Like a Man on November 16, 2004 10:12 PM

Nah, I think this is a great thread. Left or right, hispanic or anglo, sane or completely bugfuck delusional, finally we've found something that we can all agree on. We all hate Clear Channel.

That's great news. Now, take the next step. It's not enough to hate Clear Channel. You have to do something to hit 'em where it hurts. You can't just change the channel, because they own all the other stations in the area.

It's time to get satellite radio. There's a ton of great rock out there, and a ton of great radio personalities. Hell, maybe W&J can get a gig on Sirius. And CC doesn't own it.

If a big enough piece of Houston's listening audience flees to satellite, it will kill Clear Channel dead. Those same ratings that knocked out Walton and Johnson will tell advertisers that their dollars would be spent better elsewhere.

Don't just bitch, act.

--Posted by HWRNMNBSOL on November 16, 2004 11:11 PM

I don't think that anyone of sound mind who gave Walton and Johnson a serious "listen to" could say that they weren't thought provoking to an extent. They questioned idiotic fads like men over the age of 10 wearing their baseball caps backwards, white boys speaking in Ebonics, pants worn down near the knees, the absurd rise of rap in our so-called civilized society, and yes, the Hollywood halfwits who blindly praised the Democratic party while their own profuse spending and outlandish incomes were the very things that might classify the stereotypical Republican! I laughed until my sides hurt on many mornings and during commercials, I would turn the station to listen to the other stations and I would find only pablum. The fact that the God-awful Sam Malone morning show was even still on amazes me! Tom Joyner is incredible and I love his show, but Walton and Johnson ruled my mornings and I am just your typical, half Hispanic, half Caucausian college graduate with a three bedroom house in Katy!

Bye bye Billy Ed, you are missed.

PETER, I KNEW THAT U WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I WROTE. HERE IS THE QUESTION AGAIN IN ANOTHER FORM. W H A T OTHER CLEAR CHANNEL MORNING SHOWS IN HOUSTON ARE RANKED HIGHER THEN WALTON AND JOHNSON? PLEASE U POSTED THEY WERE RANKED 7TH AMONG NON ETHICS AND AM MORNING SHOWS. SO DOES THAT MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU. I MEAN ATLEAST ANSWER THE QUESTION WITH THE STIPULATION THAT U YOURSELF THREW IN. R E M E M B E R NONETHIC AND NO AM M O R N I N G S H O W S. DON'T JUST SHOW ME SOMETHING I KNOW. HISPANICS ARE NO LONGER THE MINORITY, DID U KNOW THAT. THERE ARE MORE HISPANICS THEN WHITE PEOPLE OK. PLUS WALTON&JOHNSON WERE NOT PROMOTED AT ALL, UNLIKE 104, AND PLUS YES EVEN OTHER CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO MORNING SHOWS(YES I KNOW 104 IS NOT CLEAR CHANNEL). BUT PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION PETER. NOT SHOW ME CRAP I KNOW ALREADY. ARE YOUR BUGEYES BLEEDING YET, GOOD. I KNOW U CAN'T STAND ANYTHING THAT GOES AGAINST WHAT U THINK OR BELIEVE BECAUSE YOUR SO SUPERIOR IN THOUGHT. AND PLUS I NEVER SAID THAT CONSPIRACY OF DEMOCRATES OR LIBS THAT TOOK THEM DOWN, OFCOURSE NOT THAT'S STUPID. I JUST SAID YOUR A DAMM LIBERAL THAT HATED WHAT THEY SAID, THAT'S ALL. THERE OWN COMPANY TOOK THEM OUT BECAUSE OF THERE OWN RADIO POLITICS. Plus Pepito is not a gay puppet, and that is a good show and so is the Madhatta show.I don't like some of there politics but i still find them entertaining. The other morning shows sssssssuxxxxx. I'm just saying Walton and Johnson don't suck like the rest of the morning shows. Like they said, "They suck less". Especially compared to there own sister stations. Now can u answer my question i posted yesterday or are u going to show me a website to go to again. Thank you Peter for your dance. The dance around the question.

--Posted by on November 17, 2004 12:36 AM

They questioned idiotic fads like men over the age of 10 wearing their baseball caps backwards, white boys speaking in Ebonics, pants worn down near the knees, the absurd rise of rap in our so-called civilized society

Dude, is that qualifies as "thought provoking," watching Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn ought to confer credit towards a PhD in Kantian Metaphysics. Did they also make fun of airline food and the wacky differences between the sexes?

I'm not sure what to make of the line, "absurd rise of rap in our society." Perhaps they're pining for yet another Steve Miller Band comeback.

For the benefit of those (still) reading this who are either too obtuse or too lazy to look at the info posted earlier in the fucking thread, lets recap:

Houston Morning Radio Arbitron Ratings
1. KLTN-FM, Raul Brindis and Pepito (7.4 share)
2. KMJQ-FM, Tom Joyner (5.8)
3 . KODA-FM, Sunny Morning Show (4.6)
4. (tie) KBXX-FM, Madd Hatta Morning Show (4.4)
4. (tie) KRBE-FM, The Morning Show with Sam Malone and Maria Todd (4.4)
6. KTRH-AM, 740, Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard (4.2)
7. KLOL-FM, 101.1, Walton & Johnson (3 .8)
8. KILT-FM, Hudson & Harrigan (3.7)
9. (tie) KPRC-AM, Pat Gray (3.2)
9. (tie) KKBQ-FM, Q Morning Zoo (3.2)

Now, using our anonymous screamer's criteria of "+Clear Channel, -AM, -ethnic" - why not just say "must be two white guys?" That'd catapult W&J to the top in no time - we see that KODA, Houston's finest in Adult Contemporary, beats W&J handily. W&J are also in a virtual tie with CC's KILT and whoever is playing Hudson and Harrigan this month.

So, eliminating virtually every other radio station due to ownership, audience, or band does indeed make W&J look like a fantastic show. How crazy I was to think otherwise.

I'm sorry, but what Andy said is right: this doesn't boil down to liberal vs. conservative, but simply to what's funny and what isn't: Walton and Johnson weren't funny. I was never that big a fan of Stevens and Pruitt either, but they were Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks compared to those two shmucks. Their on-air imitations were the worst kind of open-mike garbage, and they were about as controversial as Jeff Foxworthy. Save your righteous indignation for a worthier cause.

I am glad to see them go. I hated that show with a passion. Ever since Howard Stern came to Houston I knew that their days were numbered. Just like it was with Stevens and Pruitt before them, more than anything, I resented the posturing as some kind of super manly men, with roomfuls of firearms and libidos that went from here to infinity. I also could not stand the right wing garbage. Towards the end I noticed they were stealing some of Stern’s material and also repeating things I had heard on the Jim Rome Show and Don and Mike. I was in Denver recently and heard “Uncle Nasty”, the former KLOL night personality on KBAP. I am sure he is laughing his ass off about now.

I do not dispise or hate any one people. What i do dispise, is when a people be it koreans to mexicans, flee there living hell to reside in American, many times illegally and in the face of death to do so. But when they come instead of adopting the American way of life, they want turn our county into a replica of what they just risked there life to escape. You don't and won't agree with me and you will most likly bend my thoughts out of context and make fun of my grammer and spelling, but you see i've been around the world I've seen first hand what america does and how it eclipsis all others. Some Stern followers say WJ cryied to much, i've tried to listen to stern and if he's not crying about so evil consevative, he's playing some jackass audio clip. New York can keep it, if thats whats funny, i'll just listen to NPR to get my daily dose, at least they hide there Socialistic views.

For those of you who miss rock I suggest the alvin community college station 89.7. Personally I haven't listened to a clear channel station in 2 years. 94.5 is poison and could careless about modern rock. I listen to 91.7, 106.9 and I used to listen to the classical station 92.1 until the assclowns changed that station's format.

"But when they come instead of adopting the American way of life, they want turn our county into a replica of what they just risked there life to escape."

What exactly is the "american" way of life? I hear over and over that america is the country with the most freedom in the world but I guess according to you that means eating junk food and listening to shitty rock. As far as being american there isn't a single law stating what the official language is here. If they want to speak spanish and only listen to spanish stations that's fine. They didn't change the station, clearchannel did.

Herr Eichenberg, there's really no way to "likly (sic) bend [your] thoughts out of context." They speak for themselves in all their white-hooded glory.

"Pete do you like the changing demographic of houston/texas and all of the south that is being overrun and braking the backs of the taxpayer's of this great nation." (sic, ad nauseum)

If you'd ever taken a course in basic economics in all your worldly travels, you'd realize that immigrants--illegal and otherwise, from Koreans to Mexicans--contribute vast sums to tax coffers.

"I do not dispise or hate any one people."

We call this being an Equal Opportunity Bigot. You do your country proud, soldier.

Talk about freedom of speech dude.

Pete, please do not delete any more pinhead posts on this thread. Once I get over the bleeding eyes, this set of comments is high comedy.

Let's BREAK IT DOWN!

"Is that all that peter and the SHE THAT WALKS LIKE A WO MAN talk about."

Walks...like a...wo....oh my Lord, I get it! By blithely inserting 'wo', a brilliant transformation is wrought, turning a man's tagline into a bludgeoning weapon of sarcasm! Thing, you are outmatched; stand down and surrender thy cutlass.

"Oh well your racist, your white hood and crap like that. What race r u 2 people."

Sir, they are negroes, and as handsome a pair of bucks as can be procured at Charleston Common. They didn't land on Plymouth Rock; Plymouth Rock landed on them, I assure you! Pray pardon their surly natures, for one is half-blind and the other suffers from billious humors; they shall be liberally beaten and returned to the capstan of the ginning mechanism, an ye be so kind.

"I actually agree with what Jay was saying."

Shocked, shocked I am! I feel my worldview reeling, for one bigot's ranting may be safely ignored, but two, and both in agreement?! that's a national mandate!

"I mean if we would go to another country would we not have to learn there language and culture or do we try to turn it into a America."

There are those who say this has already occurred.

"U guys never make no sense. Plus, u r very unfunny."

C, U might get more out of this if u would pull your head out of your : and pay a10tion 2 what's going on. Or, u could have an N U rism and - out. Man, I can keep this up ~ cows come home.

"U can taste the bitterness in your posts."

Ah, delicious bitterness, with just a hint of soy.

"I like Stern, Don and Mike and W&J. Hey they all have different views, but they are all entertaining."

Then we are in complete agreement. You are permitted to be entertained by Walton & Johnson, or a talking animatronic stuffed bass, or reality television, or whatever mindless pap has seized the limited imaginations of hydroencephalids everywhere. Go forth and hoot uproariously, and with my blessing. But don't do it in my living room, or on my driveway, or where I have to struggle to decipher your cuneiform electronic scribblings into something approximating a written language. Here, I must advise you, you may be strenuously mocked.

So what can we surmise form all this and better yet, who can we blame? Is it “corporate radio”, or the changing demographic, or the FCC, a liberal conspiracy, or the rise of paid services such as XM that led to the eventual collapse of KLOL? My theory is that it is neither. It is the fact that the city of Houston is ten years behind the rest of the country when it comes to modern culture. I am not comparing Houston simply to LA, or New York but to mid-sized cities like Memphis and Charlotte and even smaller cities such as Austin. The truth is that the type of station KLOL was should have been changed about the same time Beavis and Butthead went off the air. The fact is that it is not cool to wear “Ozzy Shirts” anymore so deal with it. My only wish in all this is that the operators of “the Buzz” would stream audio of KROQ in LA and simply do whatever they do, and then we would have decent radio in Houston. Until then my Mp3 player will be in perpetual loop. At least with that I only have myself to blame if the music sucks. As for those of you who thought W&J were cool and/or funny I wish you could travel as much as I do so you could hear what other cities put out there.

"Ah, delicious bitterness, with just a hint of soy."

First of all, HOMOSOL u don't have the power too bless any body. Secondly Pete, u don't know if people would have liked to read that post that directed towards u and your friend. U just didn't post it because it slammed the both of u. I mean when the truth is told, doesn't it seem that u just rather sweep it under the rug.

--Posted by joey vino on November 19, 2004 7:23 AM

"Cows come home", hahahahahahlololol. So funny and original. Homosol you shouldn't talk about your mom and your girlfriend like that. You know what, u r right i need to get my head out of my: (wait let's keep this religously clean)and pay a10tion. Gosshhleee HOMSOL, that is so neat i never have seen that before "pay a10tion". Wow, that is very fresh and orignal.

--Posted by Joey Vino on November 19, 2004 7:40 AM

HSOL i just want to know because i'm too dumb is that what kind of shows do u watch or listen to that require so much brain power. I mean i want to have alot of brain power like u. Or do u just read all day and go to operas. Please list u have one.

--Posted by joey vino on November 19, 2004 7:45 AM

It only took 40 comments, but we've finally reached the point where nobody's talking about W&J anymore. Life is good.

First of all, HOMOSOL u don't have the power too bless any body.

Au contraire, my mnemonic friend. Our beloved HWRNMNBSOL is a bona fide rabbi from the Temple of Beth I Hear U Calling and certified Love Doctor from the University of Funkenstania.

Secondly Pete, u don't know if people would have liked to read that post that directed towards u and your friend. U just didn't post it because it slammed the both of u. I mean when the truth is told, doesn't it seem that u just rather sweep it under the rug.

Right. The "truth." Shit, you should be thanking me for deleting yet another of your misspelled, incomprehensible, Cro-mag leavings. Are you that big of a glutton for punishment? Have you considered calling one of those ads in your weekly paper for someone to put you in diapers and spank you? It might be more fulfilling.

But wait: let me anticipate your possible responses...

"Hahaha i tried calling but your mamma said u wouldn't like it."

"i dont know what u r talking about is there a weekly paper too?"

"please list all weekly papers u know of with these ads like i asked or are you afraid of the truth?"

Does that cover it? Shit, I wish I had kept it up now.

Homosol you shouldn't talk about your mom and your girlfriend like that.

OOohhhhh, burn on you "HomoSol!" Face! [Other assorted junior high howls of scorn]

HSOL i just want to know because i'm too dumb is that what kind of shows do u watch or listen to that require so much brain power. I mean i want to have alot of brain power like u. Or do u just read all day and go to operas. Please list u have one.

Ah, this is better. A demand for snooty pop culture credentials wrapped around a tasty dig at "HomoSol's" manhood ("go to operas"...sublime).

The sad truth is, The Gay Sun and I own those newfangled "smart people TVs" you may have heard about (or maybe not, since they only advertise on smart people radio and through our subcutaneous Mensa chips). Our selection of programs is a little different from those you may enjoy. I can't speak for him, but some of my favorites include:

Everybody Loves Rousseau
CSI: Ninevah
Knot Theory's Landing
Monday Night Fractals
Without a Trace Element
Frontline (we let that one sneak out)
Weekend at Bernoulli Polynomial's (Of the Second Kind)

Hope this helps.

you slay me.

--Posted by julianna on November 19, 2004 2:32 PM

Whoa Julianna sounds like Peter has plugged your hole already. Layed the pipe in you cunt. He probly dicked u already. Lol. Damm maybe i said what Peter covered what i said already. Don't delete this because my bad grammer and mispells.

--Posted by Joey Vino on November 22, 2004 3:30 PM

Don't delete but julianna is easy

--Posted by Joey Vino on November 22, 2004 3:36 PM

I didn't know we were being graded on what was posted. I like the way peter always tries to over dress up his words. I didn't know that peter was part of the fab 5. Maybe u understand that because you are somebody's GAY SON. LOl

--Posted by Joey vino on November 22, 2004 3:51 PM

Anyways i can describe how peter is. He's a grossly overweight fat white pasty loser that is probly in his 30s. He had a 100 average(20yearsago) in his english class, so watchout if u know another language he might frown apond it. His english skills r so good but yet he can't land him a job in newspaper or radio. And his looks won't even qualify him for T.V.

--Posted by Joey Vino on November 22, 2004 4:16 PM

This is my last post because the people who run this site are so closed mind and not even challenging. Peter alone makes the website horrible. He's has a sourish, negative, unhumourous, gaylike tone agenda he tries to protray. It's neat how a dick can also be named peter. lol. Good luck w/ your lame ass site.

--Posted by Joey Vino on November 22, 2004 4:24 PM

And they still come slithering out of the woodwork.

My apologies to Ms. Julianna for such tacky, crude behavior. I am embarrassed by my gender at times.

PS: Isn't "Joey Vino" the name of a midget gay porn star? You know, the guy famed for felching that sweet, sweet man-wine?

--Posted by The Thing That Walks Like a Man on November 22, 2004 5:39 PM

Actually, "Joey Vino" is the name of the guy who enjoyed the pinnacle of his life in high school, where he apparently spent most of his time ditching English class, beating up on the kids that made good grades, and coercing women into having sex with him in the back of his I-Roc. Ah, the good times.

Now, years later, he's forced to watch in mute rage as these same "nerds" score decent jobs, homes, and are able to talk to actual human women in person without getting crane kicked in the groin. His only respite? Taking breaks for surfing for "barely legal teens" to check up on his intellectual heroes, Walton and Johnson, whose career, paralleling his own, is in the toilet. But it makes him feel better to post his chickenshit anonymous messages from his 1-bedroom apartment off Hillcroft, adopting an alias which - he thinks - makes him sound like a character from The Sopranos (that, or he's just a big Matt LeBlanc fan).

Why would I delete your posts, "Joey?" From your obvious way with women (I'm sure Julianna is combing the white pages to track your suave ass down), your suspiciously rabid homophobia, and your masterful command of the English language, I can only conclude that every word you plink out with your lotion-smeared index fingers must be preserved for the historical record, if only so future generations can remember what happens when you scrimp on public education.

Good luck with your lame ass life.

That's about right, get over it, Kerry got smoked! That's not W & J's fault it is his own fault, all they did was point out the obvious flip-flops that Kerry made. Just suck it up, stop pouting in the corner, Petey. You can jump back on your soapbox in four more years when Hilary runs. Then when she looses, you and all the other ridiculous democrats can move out of the United States. Maybe Michael Moore will buy an island somewhere for all you morons to live!

--Posted by kjaye on November 23, 2004 1:20 PM

Then when she looses

When she "looses" what?

Can I call you RayJaye?

--Posted by Pete on November 23, 2004 2:20 PM

Shall I retort? Nah, looks like the boys (who I've never met, by the way, joey, you slimy, bottom-feeding, useless commoner) covered that for me.

You should watch your mouth. Your inane ramblings and perpetual derision do nothing for you, but indeed only serve to amuse the hell out of everyone else. Why would you wish to continue?

p.s. Correct grammar and spelling are sexy! :)

--Posted by julianna on November 23, 2004 2:58 PM

The 2008 Presidential election is what Hilary will lose you mumbling idiot. Do you really think that you impress anyone with your novel like writing skills? Go get a real job and get off the web. I was simply trying to find out what happen to the best radio show on FM radio, when I came across you and your unstoppable ramblings. I would like to hear you call into the Walton and Johnson show one day and see if you can tread the water. I am a firm believer in, if you don't like it...leave (or at least change the channel.) But, it is people like you who have no life and rather bitch about everything under the sun than to concentrate their efforts on something they actually like. But you are so cynical that you don't like anything, so in between Star Trek movies you sit on the Internet bad mouthing things that should be of no concern to you. You have the choice to listen to anything on the radio so why do you insist on listening to something you don't like? Get a life...I am sure you going back and forth between your millions of sites like this complaining about everyone that is not a KERRY lover! I wonder what you think of RUSH. Hum, I know exactly what a person like yourself will say in the first sentence of your attack on Rush. Let Walton and Johnson come back to New Orleans, we have too many liberals here so we could use some reasonable voices. I can't believe I have stooped to your pathetic level. I have never done this sort of thing before but your comments were so uncalled for that I had to speak my mind. Take the time and effort you are wasting here and put it towards something positive because this pathetic little site will not change anyone’s thoughts of the show. Just give it up you miserable punk!

--Posted by kjaye on November 23, 2004 3:52 PM

One aspect that seems to be missing in these comments is the fact that Walton and Johnson are not just on in Houston. They were brought into Houston from the New Orleans area and are still being piped back there every morning. They are also widely popular in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They may be down, but they are definately not "out". They have fans that are willing to back their play with their hard earned cash. Walton and Johnson will be back, whether you like them or not. Hell, if these guys had run for Governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Blanco would be back at home in Lafayette, baking cookies with the grandkids, where she belongs!

--Posted by Tedeau on November 23, 2004 3:53 PM

Okay I wouldn't have even known that this thread was so insane if Pete hadn't alluded to it in his most recent post. You people are nuts! I especially like how the level of total ignorance is directly proportionate to the total lack of spelling, grammatical and vocabulary skill. Pat yourselves on the back, my scary troglodytes. You do America proud. *Shudder*

--Posted by Tracy on November 24, 2004 11:05 AM

Go get a real job and get off the web.

Because the two are mutually exclusive.

I was simply trying to find out what happen to the best radio show on FM radio, when I came across you and your unstoppable ramblings.

"Spare Change" can still be heard on Saturday afternoons on KPFT. Thanks for asking.

What happens when the unstoppable rambling meets the immovable dolt? Time will tell.

I am a firm believer in, if you don't like it...leave (or at least change the channel.) But, it is people like you who have no life and rather bitch about everything under the sun than to concentrate their efforts on something they actually like.

Wow. You must read this site almost daily in order to form such an accurate portrayal of my style. Good job.

so in between Star Trek movies you sit on the Internet bad mouthing things that should be of no concern to you. You have the choice to listen to anything on the radio so why do you insist on listening to something you don't like?

You're on the internet too, genius (that's the technology that blessed us with the ability to read your opinions). And insulting people online by calling them Star Trek fans is so 1997.

And, as stated earlier but obviously too far back in time to seize your gnat-like attention span, I didn't listen to W&J, but I heard enough of their shtick to know it was garbage.

I am sure you going back and forth between your millions of sites like this complaining about everyone that is not a KERRY lover!

I was never a Kerry lover. I'm a Bush hater. Learn to fucking read.

I wonder what you think of RUSH. Hum, I know exactly what a person like yourself will say in the first sentence of your attack on Rush.

He's a liar? He's a racist and a fear-monger? He's a hypocrite for advocating harsh drug laws while doctor shopping to fill his illegal prescriptions? Please, stop me when I get warm.

I can't believe I have stooped to your pathetic level. I have never done this sort of thing before but your comments were so uncalled for that I had to speak my mind.

This sounds like the opening to a "Penthouse Forum" letter.

Take the time and effort you are wasting here and put it towards something positive because this pathetic little site will not change anyone’s thoughts of the show.

No, but it coaxed you into crawling out from whatever crevasse you Walton & Johnson fans all seem to occupy. So that's, uh, something.

Jackin' in the Free World
Another iPod side effect? According to this MacWorld article ( iPods killed the radio star), there's a new trend in Commercial Radio.......
