"Oh, no no no."
William Shatner is (along with Lynda Carter, Snidely Whiplash, B.A. Baracus, and the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team) the patron saint of APCB.
So it is with no small sense of joy and wonder I present for you our man on the NCC-1701 like we all want to remember him: singing Elton John's "Rocket Man" in triplicate. For those who've never seen it, or those who saw that Family Guy episode where Stewie paid homage to The Shatner's performance and wondered what the hell was going on, enjoy (link via Metafilter).
You know, it takes a robust ego to not only withstand but welcome that kind of humiliation. And it takes nerves of steel to refrain from ripping out the vocal cords of someone so thoroughly destroying your song. Props to the bewigged Shatner and John.
Jesus...creeping...shit.
I laughed unto the point of defecation. This is even better than the .mp3 I have of Leonard Nimoy singing the "Bilbo Baggins Song," circa 1967-68.
Great SFX, too. Three - count 'em - three! Shatners. Be still, my beating heart!
He's lucky he already was established as a TV actor before he did this - it's the only thing that differentiates him from William Hung.
Mr. Steve, there's a galaxy of Shatner-Nimoy goodness awaiting you!
Shatner's "The Transformed Man" is sublime, with songs and dramatic readings. And Nimoy released 5--count 'em, 5!--records.
If you're not into vinyl, a compilation cd featuring the two ("Spaced Out: The Best of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner") is fairly decent for the price. I also recommend tracking down Rhino's "Golden Throats" collections for their (and other celebrity) misfires.
Lo, there is even more Shatner greatness to behold, um, behear!
He's released a new cd, "Has Been." It truly is amazing.
