Getting Lost

Posted by pete at May 26, 2005 6:38 AM

Found myself in the rare position of being home on a Wednesday night, and being too much of a music fan to ever subject myself to two hours of American Idol, I checked out the Lost season finale.

I did watch the first six episodes of the show or so before losing steam. The setup was interesting, and the idea that the survivors were stranded on some kind of Monster Island amused me, but - I don't know - I guess I'm easily distracted, and several shiny objects interposed themselves between me and the TV over the past months.

Even so, I was able to follow most of what happened last night. For my beneift, could anyone actually paying attention to the show answer these questions?

1) Where did "Dark Territory" come from? Did someone find a map at some point?

2) How did they know there was dynamite on the Black Pearl Rock>?

3) Are there any bad guys left? Sawyer has a heart of gold, Kate - it appears - was just misunderstood. Locke seems like he could be legitimately nuts, I guess.

4) Think J.J. Abrams reads a lot of Michael Crichton?

The finale was an amusing diversion, but I can see Lost sinking into X-Files or Twin Peaks territory, throwing out so many plot twists and red herrings the creators end up losing track.

Oh well, the one guy exploded real good.

The Crazy French Lady told them about the Dark Territory, Black Rock, and contained dynamite.

Incidentally, I've heard Arzt, the 'sploded guy, will be back next season. No kidding, he is listed in the cast for next season. Even though Jack had to wipe a quarter size piece of Arzt from his shoulder.

i started watching Lost two weeks ago, no joke. so, i'm a wee bit behind. Arzt apparently just popped up with a speaking role right when i started watching -- who'd'a thunk he was just another redshirt?

here's my question: is it worth catching up with the series when the first season comes out on DVD? (which i assume will be in about 15 minutes...)

He'll probably be "back" in the sense that Ian Somerhalder was last night: more flashbacks.

It actually doesn't come out until Sept. 6, giving one precious little time to get caught up, I would think.

Then again, it isn't like you'll be going out much at that point.

I have been watching it the whole season and have been fairly impressed. I too worry that it will fall into the X-files chain-jerking M.O. I certainly hope they have a story arc and can keep with it to a logical or semi-logical conclusion. There are some interesting possibilities with Locke and the shows you missed: particularly that he was paralyzed from the waist down, recovered the ability to walk, and then lost it, but through the sacrifice to the island of another castaway, gained it back again. I am working on the hypothesis that this may be all inside of Locke's head, ala Identity, but hopefully without the crappy ending. It probably won't pan out, but it could be interesting.

And how can you fault a show when scruffy modern-day pirates show up at the end, shoot a character, kidnap the boy, and light up the island getaway craft? Maybe more than one hole will be explored during the next season.

It is extremely worth catching up with, if you "lost" track during the season. FYI - ABC will be rerunning it over the summer (with the exception of a few episodes). I've been told that some will be shown back to back on one night, so they can squeeze in as many episodes as possible.

If you don't watch each week, you miss a lot of the little clues and witticisms.

As far as the bad guys - Locke is still the biggest question, and apparently, new characters will be introduced next season - maybe more baddies to come???

The way I see it this show has a three season life span. If they don't get off the island by then it will be due the over used red herrings and tossed plot threads and only he die hard fans will keep watching. I see lost airing on Friday or Saturday nights the black hole of tv shows) three years hences.

I just hope Michelle Rodriguez comes back in season two. She had a short (read 30 second) guest spot in a flashback in the episode before the finale as a passenger on the plane. Don't know how they'd do it, but she'd make a cool addition to the cast.

I love the show but have little to no faith ABC will keep it going as great as it went this season. The finale was a bit of a let down as well...it gave away too much and the cliffhanger with Sawyer getting shot was like...Cliffhanger 101 material. I thought I was watching FALOCN CREST circa 1984 or something.

I also think there's a ton of room to grow as there's still ALOT we don't know about the characters...plus the whole "what the hell is going on here" thing.
