"It's a different holiday. It's called...El Malaguena."
"El Maleguena?"
"It's for Spanish Jews."

On Beliefnet (where, admittedly, I don't spend a lot of time) there's a multifaith calendar of religious holidays. Just the thing for those in need of a day off (via MetaFilter).

Hot damn, October is pretty much a wash.

Interestingly, for many years, many (ostensibly) Catholic families in the American Southwest and northern Mexico would observe a holiday called the Feast of Saint Esther. These people were descendants of Jews who had undergone forced conversion during the time of the Spanish Inquisition but who continued to practice their Jewish faith secretly: Crypto-Jews, AKA Marranos. There are many of these families in New Miexico even today.
