Explosions in London

Posted by pete at July 7, 2005 6:05 AM

Everybody's heard by now, since I assume APCB isn't your source for international news, about the bombings in London:

Two people died and large numbers of casualties were reported after at least six blasts on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.

A police spokeswoman confirmed there had been two deaths at Aldgate and UK home secretary Charles Clarke said the explosions caused "terrible injuries".

The BBC's Frank Gardner said Arab sources said the blasts were probably the work of al-Qaeda.

Before news came out about the coordination of the Underground bombs, I considered the possibility this was related to the G8 Summit or even someone pissed off about the 2012 Olympics. Doesn't seem so likely now. Shit.

What's the likelihood the IRA are making noise again? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Sir Ian Blair said there had been at least six explosions, but said the picture was still "very confused".

Scotland Yard said explosions have been reported at Edgware Road, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate.
[...]
All London Underground services have been suspended indefinitely and bus services in central London (Zone One) have been halted.

If only two people end up dying as a result of six tube explosions, it'll be pretty remarkable. Regardless, I'm sure all of our thoughts are with the people of London today. Personally, I've been there on a number of occasions and - with the exception of the time we were almost mugged near Buckingham Palace - have always enjoyed the city.

Now let's see how long is takes Bush and Blair use this as an example of why we need to "stay the course" in Iraq. It's just too bad it took something like this to finally get American networks to stop talking about Natalee Holloway and frigging shark attacks.

They're already on it. NPR played a statement from Bush this morning, and another from Blair about ten minutes later. The substance was essentially the same, although the style couldn't have been more different.

This truly does validate our actions and policy in the Middle East.
With Saddam behind bars, now we can relax and feel safe in the knowledge that we are winning the war on terror.

Thank you Spain! Because you buckled like a belt after the attacks in 2004, you showed these fundamentalist morons that terrorism could achieve their ends. The only surprised is that it took them this long to try it again.

On another note, how bottom of the barrel are they scraping on terrorists these days? Like Pete said, if you only kill two people while blowing up one double-decker bus and a couple of tube stations you are really under-achieving on your destructive potential.

Spain was going to kick out their government before 3/11. They were down in the polls even before the bombings.

Meanwhile, I wonder how Bushie the Wonder Chimp and his lap dog in England are going to connect Saddam with this set of bombings when he's already in jail? They'll need some new scapegoats (I mean, heaven forbid that we actually finish off al Qaida!)... watch out, Iran.

Hey - I NEVER discount the ability of this bAdministration to spin this awful catastrophe to Team Bush advantage (or try to). They are already trying to claim the spin on Soc. Sec. as "Public Dissatisfaction at Not Enough Accomplished on the Bush Privatization Plan" is the root of all bad polls.

But am loving the potential "Rove-Gate" fiasco looming...and as a permanent selachophobie I never discount "shark attacks" neither. *sigh*

How low do you think the Bush Poll Numbers can actually get?

Iran? Now the President has all the justification he needs to invade North Korea...

I think the Falklands might need another ass-kicking, using our current War on Terror paradigm.

Fucking-A, man.

The thing is, Rove can use BOTH the presence or absence of terrorism to acheive his ends.

Presence: we must prevail over terrorism as long as there are attacks like this.

Absence: we are winning the war on terror.

War is peace.

maybe in a couple of years we can get a Downing Street II; Revenge of the Stiffs out of this whole fiasco. i'm sure these two brain surgeons can muster up a means to tie all this together in an effort to invade Peru for harboring terrorists and providing wmds to the world.

I live near Hill Air Force Base in Utah and I have never heard so much air traffic overhead as I've heard the last two weeks. The flights have increased during the day and they're conducting night flights as well. Yes, air traffic is expected when you live near an air force base, but this is unusual. I don't know what it means or if it means anything but it's very disturbing especially in light of the London murders.
