Super Blow

Posted by pete at February 6, 2006 6:51 AM

Maybe it was because this was the first Super Bowl we watched at home with no attendant festivites in the last...ten years or so, but the game seemed pretty lackluster. Unless you like arguing the officiating, I guess. My take on a few calls:

1. I honestly thought Roethlisberger was in on the bootleg TD in the 1st half. The replay appeared to show the ball breaking the plane before he was knocked back.

2. I can't remember if Jackson's foot hit the pylon before or after he went out of bounds or not. My recollection is that he'd already stepped out.

3. That reverse halfback TD pass to Ward was pretty sweet.

4. I know the one TD for Seattle was called back after holding, which I'm seeing a lot of people question. For the record, I counted at least five plays where Seattle could've been called for holding and never got flagged.

5. The personal foul on Hasselbeck after he was picked off was bullshit.

6. "Bad" officiating or not, Seattle's time management at the end of both halves was stupefying. Four passes up the middle with under two minutes to go and no time outs? I realize they had no confidence in their kicker after two missed FGs, but come on.

Maybe the refs were Aggies.

Happily, I had no money on the game. I say "happily" because I probably would've bet on Seattle, but my marriage to a die-hard Steelers fan put the kibosh on that.

Oh, and: Worst. Commercials. Ever. The only marginally entertaining one was the one for Michelob Ultra Amber ("You were open, but now you're closed.") and the V for Vendetta trailer.

It was a crappy, error-filled, uninspired game--and I'm sorry, but "the Bus" hits the line and falls forward three yards--repeat this a couple thousand times and he gets in the hall of fame?
Give me a break. And I'm sure ABC was so glad they had him wired--lots of important information must have been hidden in all those cryptic whoops and grunts.

The beer commercial with the Clydsdale colt pulling the wagon was cute. But otherwise, I agree.

A relatively boring, seemingly poorly coached game, although at least it wasn't a total blowout.

And while I like The Rolling Stones, their halftime show was equally lackluster.

Couldn't resist the Aggie joke could you? I agree with all of your major points. The Parker run in the beginning of the 2nd half was very nice. I thought the officiating was good throughout the game, with the exception of the call you mention in #5. I have heard some Seattle fans complaining about the offensive pass intereference penalty that negated a Seahawk touchdown. The WR clearly pushed off. Seattle blew it with dropped passes, holding penalties, and overthrown balls that caused the receivers to go out of bounds with the catches.

Lost a buck on Seattle +4, won a buck on the under. Net loss - $10. Betting gave me a reason to watch the game. I agree with the poorly coached assesment. The commercials, as always, were craptacular.

Well, as is more often the case, I too had no interest in the teams and had to be reminded that the game would be on this week end. I watched the Simpson's episodes that aired ( I don't often get a chance to watch uninterrupted.) and I did flip over to the game once in a while and managed to see every questionable call of the evening. Even Madden seemed a little more than miffed, so it was back to FOX and what passes for Family guy. At 3:30 I found out the winner as I awoke to catch my flight out this morning. For Steelers’ fans a hearty whadoyaknow and for the Seahawk ilk a sincere awh? Maybe next year. I have only one question; The Stones?
