The music schedule is up for this year's South by Southwest festival. I haven't gone through it too closely, mostly because I'll only be there for the first weekend to...ahem..."see some films." The Wife will be on another continent during the following week, meaning my odds of hitting a late night show at the Back Room and then dragging my ass back to Houston the same night are, shall we say, unlikely.
So it really pains me to see this:
La Zona Rosa (612 W 4th St) (All Ages)
The Drams - 10:00 p.m.
Drive By Truckers - 1:00 a.m.
In case you didn't know, the Drams are Brent, Jess, and Tony from Slobberbone, plus Keith Killoren and Chad Stockslager of Budapest One. The DBTs, for their part, have taken the title of Pete's Favorite Band in the wake of Slobberone's break-up (the latter occupied the spot for a good four years).
Somehow, I don't think our usual babysitter would be up for staying over until 5 AM (I think they charge double time after 10:00 anyway).
I'll be there! I'll drunk dial you from the show and tell you my car battery is dead and you have to come get me. Oh....wait...
eh, just drop SWSNBN off at our house -- she can crash in the nursery with harry while you go get your drink on.
Seeing as how I'm your usual babysitter and you don't pay me a DAMN thing, you shouldn't whine about charging overtime. Although, in this particular case you're screwed cuz I'm hoping to go this year (and not as your designated driver).
And here I considered you a member of the family.
I was referring to the high school chicks we sometimes employ, but rant away if you want to lose full refrigerator privileges.
To anyone heading to SXSW, I heartily recommend the sonic delights of my good friend Jonathan Kane, who's playing at the Central Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 16 at 11:00 p.m. He plays a sort of minimalism meets the blues with a nice noisy droning edge, if that sort of thing appeals to you (it's way better than my hamfisted description suggests). He was the founding drummer of Swans, then spent years in Gods and Monsters with Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas. His current band features Ernie Brooks, ex of the Modern Lovers. Really, how can you not go? Check out the nice review of Jonathan's CD in the current Rolling Stone, then go see him and buy him a beer.
It's an all ages show, maybe it's time to broaden your child's musical horizons.
