For all the trumpeting this morning regarding the death of al-Zarqawi (CNN even broke out the size 24 font), it seems celebration is a bit premature. The guy wasn't a Blofeld-ian supervillain, and his death won't cause the insurgents to slink away into the shadows. Reality will set in once people realize IEDs and car bombs are going to keep going off without him.
Somebody certainly seems eager to capitalize on the situation, however, as President Bush is preparing to hold a news conference at 6:30 AM. How prompt.
Wow. I'm glad I'm not alone in my cynicsm. I waiting until the furor dies down in two weeks and we find out it wasn't exactly al-Zarqawi, but his cousin's brother who sometimes runs errands for al-Zarqawi.
Actually, it sounds like they have pretty solid evidence that they got the right guy. From tattoos and scars at first, but then from fingerprints.
As for the hype, from what I've heard so far, there will certainly be a fair amount of celebrating and trumpeting from the administration, but mixed in is a modicum of restraint. Nobody so far is saying that Iraq will be peaceful as a result, or even that Al-Qaeda will suffer a crippling blow as a result. I think some of the Bushies might be a tad gun-shy after the whole "Mission Accomplished" debacle.
What is this "reality" you speak of that is supposed to be setting in? I've been waiting for it since the 2000 election...
I watched the news conference this morning. I honestly don't know why Bush's handlers let him speak. He can't pronounce anything properly -- I think I might kill myself if I have to hear him say "trrrerrr" (terror) again.
what are you talking about? It's all over. Pres. Bush got the only important terrorist. We can all rest safe now, bring the boys home and party. In addition, they just solved aids too, so begin boinking at will. Also they've now found the cure for hunger and the gas shortage. Get ready world...Bush's got it all figured out...we can all just chill now.
Bush's got it all figured out...we can all just chill now.
I hope that means I can also stop worrying about the skyrocketing cost of my health insurance, gas prices, and my stagnant wages.
Thank you Pete! A voice of sanity amidst this morning's hype.
Of course, the Bush cabal is going to milk this for all it's worth, since it's the first thing approaching "good news" that they've had in what seems like years.
