"Lenny," about whom I know...absolutely nothing, but who picked 18 out of 24 categories correct, eliminating the need for going to the tiebreaker (the next closest contestant had 14).
Lenny will have his pick of the Battle of the Planets - The Legacy Collection or the Alien Quadrilogy. "Congratulations," if that's what you want to call it.
What was my score?
7
Also, it seems unreasonable to give specialist awards like Best Sound Editing (Not Best Sound You Idiot Can’t You Tell the Difference) and Best Short Film (Live-Action) the same weight as general awards like Best Director.
So they should count for more, right? I mean, just about everybody picked Best Director correctly.
I suppose it depends on who your audience is. If it’s mostly an audience that knows all the nominees and can intelligently pick among them, then weighting a more obscure category as high or higher than the tier-1 categories makes sense. If it’s mostly a lay audience whose first exposure to “Once” is seeing it nominated for best song, who are essentially going to either pick randomly or parrot someone else’s opinion that they found on the web for the tier-3 categories, then I think weighting categories differently improves the entertainment value for the participants.
But it’s not my contest, so what I think is not especially noteworthy.
Also, apparently, I’m a poor handicapper. Oh, well.
I was thinking next year we could make it more *interesting*.
*wink*
You KNOW, interesting.
I am still reeling over the fact that no Oscar party was held at your abode…but then again, I sat alone in the dark, in my sweats, drinking Amaretto on the rocks, so who am I to talk.
Congrats Lenny, whoever the hell you are!
I have no idea what my score was, and I don’t even really recall what I picked. I had seen almost none of the movies, and so my guesses were based on what I’d gleaned from other sources. I picked stuff like Short Documentary and Short Animated base on how erudite their titles sounded, and I think I got them both right. My original plan for visual and sound effects was to go with the most highly budgeted films. I think that worked too. I only played because it was free, and I’ve never let my ignorance of something stop me before.
As for adjusting rules, I say keep it simple. If it requires a calculator, it just becomes a little less fun. Sort of like math.
