What's in a name?

Posted by pete at May 19, 2008 9:45 PM

Since I can only assume my regular readership were shocked into jealous silence by my revelation that I've seen Indy 4, I figured I'd better post something encouraging more feedback. Specifically, naming this gal:

She's 7 weeks old. Mother was a Siamese, father of...indeterminate ancestry. Right now she's snoozing on The Wife's lap.

So we've kicked around a couple of names, but haven't settled on anything. The front-runners are Kali, Liffey, Sinatra, and Starbuck. Several other suggestions of mine were shot down. Probably for good reason.

Audrey springs immediately to mind, Also Josie (Packard, from Twin Peaks, not & the pussycats). She’s a cutie.

So many interesting options.

Bellatrix, Guinness, 47, T’Challa, [OK that’s a theme. I’ll stop now…], Lol, Elizabeth II, Trixie (maybe name her Liz II and call her Trixie…), Siddartha (call her Syd), Django, Ms. Pryde, Hastur.

Wow. I NEVER thought I’d see the day when APCB entered the realm of Cat-Blogging. You can never come back from this one.

(And you gotta clue us into her personality, as that’s key to an appropriate name. Given that all we have to work with is “adorable”, Chloe or Zoe always works in a pinch. I’m partial to Ilsa or Inkblot, myself.)

For the comic book nerds: Bubastis (Boo for short I guess) or Selina

Maeby (a nod to Alia ShawKAT), Jinx (Halle Berry’s Bond Girl), Leslie (the real name of the guy who plays Stanley on “The Office”) or Anna (as in Leonownes, Deborah Kerr’s character from the King and I)

For the TV nerds: Isis! Also, in a Blackadder vein, Mrs. Miggins.

Yes! You became a cat person. I actually have two cats. I used to have 3 but one of them had a heart attack in my arms and died. Worst day ever.

But to the naming of your new friend, I think Sinatra is an awesome name. LOVE the Django suggestion. Django! That is my vote.

Urlacher

If you’re going to blog about cats, at least be a man about it.

For all the use it’s going to have, “Cat”. If you’re in a Dean Jones mood, “That Darn Cat”. If you’re in a Ken Berry mood, God help you.

I know it is better for a dog but how about Neruda…

MataHaari?

Olive. We got a kitten 6 months ago, and my wife vetoed that name, but I think it’s the perfect name for a cat of that color.

Yog-Sothoth.

Tell The Wife it’s the Hindu goddess of love, or something.

I would have recommended Hastur, but you’d have to be careful if the cat ever got out.

“Here Hastur, Hastur, Hastur, Hastur…Hey, is that you moving behind those bushes?”

Bast!

Please not Urlacher.

You should name it “Lifesaver.”

Oh, wait…my angry Asian neighbor just said you should not name it Lifesaver, you should name it Shithead.

Cats suck.

Inky. Midnight. Tarbaby. Onyx. Singularity. Eclipse. Basement Cat. Darth Kitty. Dammit. Jones (“Indiana,” “James Earl,” or Alien, take your pick).

I was thinking Belladonna or Raylene.

But you probably shouldn’t listen to me.

She looks like a Friday to me. :)

I can’t believe you’ve sunk to Dad’s level. A good name? Belial.

Okay, here goes: Dublin, Jameson, Trixie (had a cat named Trixie too! then again, we also had Ralph & Norton) Lucy…Good Luck!

Wow. I NEVER thought I’d see the day when APCB entered the realm of Cat-Blogging. You can never come back from this one.

If you ever see another cat-related entry on here, you can throw that stone. Until then, not so much.

Urlacher

Tempting…but no. Besides, I don’t think she’s going to be very big.

Maybe Hester?

If you’re in a Ken Berry mood, God help you.

I’m usually in more of a Larry Storch mood.

I know it is better for a dog but how about Neruda…

Cute.

I also like how if I was going by number of nominations, “Hastur” would be in the lead.

Cats suck.

Baaaa-rrrry…

I was thinking Belladonna or Raylene.

“Belladonna” is a perfectly acceptable name. Or rather, it used to be. Now I’d just feel creepy.

I can’t believe you’ve sunk to Dad’s level.

Hey, at least our cat was free.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions. I should also point out that adopting a cat wasn’t some hidden urge I’ve had for years, but we heard that having a pet might be good for SWSNBN, and a dog is just more time than either The Wife or I have right now.

Unfortunately, you’re all incorrect on the name, which we have decided will be “Ripley.” Mason was close, though.

“I can’t believe you’ve sunk to Dad’s level”
Hey, I’m allowed one mistake in my life (or two).

--Posted by raybob on May 22, 2008 7:35 AM

I remember Molly. We have an Aussie (you know, a dog?) named Sheila -clever, eh?.
I am not surpirsed by your feline aquisition - it was a matter of time.
A name for a cat is not something I can really get behind; “The Cat!” has always worked for me. I do find it interesting that this post has illicited the heaviest response you’ve had in some time,eh? I like Raybob chiming in leaving his “one mistake” somewhat vague. As for a name, I vote for Duke - after David Duke. C’mon have fun with it!
