A clarification

Posted by pete at July 21, 2008 11:09 PM

I am here to stand by comments made on this blog last week stating that 99 perecent of talk radio hosts are self-loathing closet queens and that the entire talk radio industry is, in fact, a fraud and a racket resulting from a lack of firm parenting. Further, I vigorously maintain the position that the desire to host a radio program is a direct byproduct of not having a father around to keep them from wallowing in their own excrement while listening to repeated playback of Johnny Horton's Greatest Hits.

These comments were meant to "boldly awaken" listeners to the radio community's attempts to produce an atmosphere where messianic blowhards provide them with inaccurate information to keep them in a perpetual state of ignorance and xenophobic paranoia. Many radio listeners are also being victimized by their inability to discern bullshit from the truth, which may not exist in all radio programs. Let the truly discriminating turn their radios off and read a book, let the willfully ignorant get a swift kick in the ass.

Now, I'll concede that the "99 percent" statement may have been a "little high." That's because it was hyperbole, which as we all know is that thing you try to shield yourself behind when a wider audience becomes aware of your idiocy and calls you on it. Still, I'm glad to have prodded discussion on the subject, and I plan to give over my entire comments section today to further discussion on whether Michael Savage is a vile sack of shit because his daddy didn't show him enough love, or if he was simply born that way.

Context

I’ve listened to my share of talk radio. I even enjoy listening to Rush. Not because I like him but because, love him or hate him, he is *very* good at what he does. Which is keeping small minded people afraid.
Anyway, even before this latest idiocy, I couldn’t stomach Savage. He just makes up the most outrageous shit he can to get people’s attention.

On the whole “daddy didn’t show enough love” vs. “just born that way”, I’m going with the latter. If it was the former, he’d more likely end up a stripper. Ew.

It is certainly the case that Michael Savage appears to be a genuine traitor to both the values and public interest of this country, but I think the evidence suggests that this is learned behavior, that he is a big ol’ hypocrite willing to believe anything he thinks his audience wants him to believe, no matter how vilely racist or ignorant it may be, with his only sincere interest in the green.

Also, “Sink the Bismarck” is a fine and entertaining tune, among other in Horton’s oeuvre. It’s not entirely Horton’s fault that sophisticated socioeconomic theory and a complex understanding of history are difficult to fit into songs three minutes long meant to entertain people with barely a high school education.

Still doesn’t excuse Savage, who is more suited to the environment of the Caucasus, circa 5,000 BCE, than he is to a technological democracy.

Being an atheist liberal with little awareness of the Dark Side known as talk radio, I’d never heard of this guy until I saw a blurb on the news yesterday. You know, the 1st Amendment is great and all, but isn’t this a prime example of how harmful it is to let idiots like this preach to even stupider people? That’s way beyond Tom Cruise and his whack view of psychiatry.
On the other hand, don’t get me started on those ADHD Ritalin Ranger fakers.

In 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson up the mighty Missisip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans and we met the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

In the July 16 broadcast, Savage also dismissed the high rate of asthma diagnoses among minority children as a “money racket” by families to get higher welfare payments.
ShorterSavage: “Geez guys! I’m not talking about white kids! What are you all worked up about?

I have forced myself to listen to Savage on many occasions over the past 8 years or so (what my father used to refer to as “knowing my enemy”), and I have to believe that he has purposely created this persona strictly for the money. I completely agree with Greg on this issue. Savage knows better, and for that he deserves any amount of pain and suffering that comes his way.

I sincererly hope that it ends up being a LOT.
